Box Butte County Sees Average Turnout in Primary

Box Butte County’s voters took to the polls on May 10 to vote in the primary election. Even without any local races or issues on the ballot in the primary, turnout was average, with 1,502 ballots cast.

Box Butte County Clerk Judy Messersmith said election day went well overall.

“It was back to normal, especially when we didn’t have any local races being contested, or any constitutional amendments or propositions,” said Messersmith. “I had anticipated that 17 percent was about all that was going to show up, and we ended up with 20 percent. A lot of people think that’s low, but that’s pretty typical for Box Butte County when there’s not any local races.”

Messersmith noted that there are some important dates approaching before the general election: July 15 is the deadline for incumbents to file for the Village of Hemingford Board of Trustees; Aug. 1 is the deadline for non-incumbents to file for the Village of Hemingford Board of Trustees. The general election is set for Nov. 8.
