Reflections for the Week of May 9-13

Community Development:

• Runza was issued a Certificate of Occupancy and they opened for business on Thursday May 12th.

• Planning Commission meeting May 10 included a Capital Improvement Budget Meeting, and Conditional Use Permit Training.

• Platte Valley Bank has started working on the exterior remodel of the building.

• KL Wood has started clearing the BNSF parking lot site at the 100 Block of Box Butte. BNSF and KL Wood worked with the City on a plan to install street light pedestals and underground conduit for that portion of the Box Butte Streetscape since they will be removing and replacing all the sidewalk as part of their parking lot project.

• Roofers are making their way back to Alliance. Permits increased by 51 from March to April and we are on track to pass Aprils permit count next week.

• Tim Weston is replacing the portion of the street removed for the water main and water service replacements on the 1100 block of Toluca. Service replacement was complicated by the tunnel under the street that connected St. Joseph’s Hospital and Marian Residence.

Police Admin:

• Project meeting with INA Alert (Motorola) for Camera Site Install.

• South Central 911 meeting.

• MOCIC – Another data push sample was sent.

• Know your force – So far the department is maintaining a 5 out of 5 average rating with several additional surveys submitted this week.

• Quadrant App – This App has been several months in the making and allows the public to turn their phone into a body cam and report their perspective of a police contact. In testing phase.

• 911 eye – Has some glitches that are being worked out to increase software stability. Still in testing.

Police Communications/Intelligence:

• Coordinated 579 calls for service.

• Completed 10 report requests.

• 0 firearms permits issued.

• Revising Code Red for spring.

Police Operations:

• 4 Child Welfare Investigations.

• 2 DUI, 36 Traffic Stops.

• 3 accidents.

• 2 K9 deployments.

• 151 Building Checks.

• 32 Community Contacts/Business Checks.

• 20 Active Investigations.

Animal Control:

• 20 Animal Calls.

• 4 Dog Impounds. 1 dog currently in the shelter.

• 0 Cat Impounds. 2 cats currently in the shelter.

Code Enforcement:

• 27 Code enforcement issues.

Notable Service:

• Downtown neighborhood meeting held.

• Hit and run accident solved.

Public Works:

• NDOR project – 3rd St. overlay nearing completion.

• Pot hole repair and crack sealing underway.

• Alley and gravel road grading underway.

• Cut and remove tree on 300 block of Missouri damaged by wind.

• City milling projects to begin June 1st.

• Sewer lake wet well maintenance underway. Sewer line jetting underway.

• Transit 628 riders this week.

• Water Annual consumer confidence report complete and posted.

• 293 water radios installed to date.

• Dave Heckman competing in Transit national Roadeo competition in Louisville Ky.

• Landfill 473 tons of refuse this week.

Electric:

• Continue to work on the three phase rebuild project east of HWY 385 across from Schiff Feedlot.

• The strong winds on Sunday night caused numerous smaller problems, two broken poles and a few trees in power line issues.

• Started the installation of new lighting at tennis court at 8th and Sweetwater, pole bases have been installed this week.

• The strong winds on Thursday afternoon caused a few smaller problems.

Fire:

• Participated in the Vietnam Veterans Honor Flight flag line.

• Attended “Fire Department Inspection Requirements” and the “Importance of Keeping Records” web training.

• Implementation of FlowMSP, which is a Commercial Structure database, continues.

Golf Course:

• Hosted a Callaway fitting day that was very well attended.

• Junior golf registration continues and is on pace to be as successful at last year.

• Over-seeded greens and other areas of the course as it greened up with warmer weather.

• Applied herbicide as necessary to control weed growth.

• Mowed on a regular daily schedule as the course greened up.

• Hosted first tournament on May 14th.

Carhenge:

• Inventoried, sorted and tagged all items that will be for sale at the Pit Stop this season.

• Deep Cleaned the Pit Stop and re-arranged to better accommodate visitors.

• Opened for business Thursdays – Sundays. Full hours will begin the last week of May.

RSVP & Senior Center:

• Continued providing meals for deliver and dine in at the Senior Center.

• Hosted a food pantry that provided boxes of food for individuals in the community.

Pool:

• Pool Chemical was delivered so tanks are ready for operation.

• Pool is filled and pumps and heaters will get started next week.

• HR hosted several nights of orientation and paperwork instruction for pool staff.

• Assembled plumbing and fixtures in the bathhouse and pump house that are taken apart to avoid freezing during the off season.

Parks & Cemetery:

• Completed numerous repairs on restrooms, irrigation and pool plumbing as they were reassembled and tested.

• Mowed and trimmed as many areas as possible.

• Installed sod over bare spaces at the Cemetery.

• Top dressed the infields as necessary at the softball complex.

• Assisted electric department with installation of lights at the tennis courts.

• Painted the lines in the pool and power washed the pool basin and internal pits in the pump house.

• Repaired mower that was down at the Cemetery. Eventually had to take it to the shop for repairs.

Library:

• Clerk Kris Wilder is working on a new project of creating bookmarks that will stay inside all the new books for patrons to use. This is being done to help prevent “dog-earing” of pages to keep the books in great shape!

• Library Clerk Pam Becker has been cleaning up the library patron accounts, which involves deleting old patron accounts and making sure the new ones are uniform in content.

• Children’s Librarian Cynthia Horn made a visit to the Early Childhood Center this week to discuss the summer reading program!

• Adult Services Librarian Emily Nelson has four ocean themed crafts planned for summer reading workshops. Watch for details!

• Technical Services Librarian Nalani Stewart is working on adding licenses to support Minecraft coding options for the kids this summer. She will announce registration details later!

• Library Director Stephanie O’Connor has been working with the Alliance Public Library Foundation to purchase non-fiction titles for the library’s Libby account. This week she added 24 titles to this collection that have exclusive use for APL patrons! Not a Libby user? Call the library and get yourself signed up! Airport:

• Passenger count for April was 305 enplaned and 297 deplaned. We had a number of delays due to weather, if it wasn’t snow it was high winds!

• There was a recall on the snow blower fuel line, it has been replaced by the manufacturer.

• Wind has been an issue this week. Wind on Sunday night blew over the S.E.A.T. base trailer, staff helped get it upright with the loader. Staff also helped the golf course haul off trees that were down from winds yesterday.

• Staff spent time doing spring maintenance on equipment, chasing tumble weeds, working prairie dogs, and mowing.

Finance:

• Capital projects were presented to the Planning Commission on Tuesday evening. Requests are being received from partners for funding and the operating budget spreadsheets will be sent to departments early next week.
