Two Receive Quilts of Valor

On Friday evening, people gathered at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church as two veterans were presented Quilts of Valor, honoring them for their service to the nation.

The first Quilt of Valor was presented to Sheryl A. Taylor, who entered the Marine Corps in June of 1970, where she was stationed at the Marine Corps Recruiting Deot at Parris Island, S.C. She served in the Marine Corps for 20 years, retiring in 1990 as an E7 Gunery Sgt. During her service, Taylor was stationed in several locations, including Okinawa, Japan, El Toro, Calif., and Buffalo, N.Y.

After retiring from the Marine Corps, Taylor entered the U.S. Border Patrol, serving in Tonawanda, Buffalo Station, N.Y. for a total of six years before transferring to Immigration and Naturalization in Washington D.C. for eight months. She returned home to Alliance in August 1997.

The second Quilt of Valor was presented to Douglas Krejci, who joined the Alliance unit of the Army National Guard on July 2, 1964. He served in active duty until July 2, 1970, and received an honorable discharge on July 2, 1972, fulfilling an eight-year obligation.

Krejci attended Basic training at Ft. Leonardwood, Mo., which included AIT training and special cook school. In 1966, during a two-week camp, Krejci took part in mountain climbing training at Eilson Air Force Base in Alaska. There, cooks were on duty for 24 hours and off for 24 hours.
