Beetdiggers Beat Lady Bulldogs in Close Match

The Alliance Lady Bulldogs traveled to Brush Colorado for a Saturday evening tussle with the Beetdiggers. The Bulldogs would be so shorthanded they could only play two JV quarters. The Bulldogs only traveled nine of their normal JV and Varsity players. Only six of the top thirteen rated VPS scale players would travel. Two freshmen were invited along to fill the void left by injury and illness. The JV would drop the two-quarter contest 20-15 but show the fight the Bulldogs would have all night.

The varsity contest would be close throughout the game. The starters would play extended minutes and show how well conditioned they are. The Bulldogs would only have 4 players coming off the bench. Luna Gonzalez, Avah Steggall, Keeley Mazanec and Macala Hood would all provide quality minutes as they stepped up and competed with pride at the varsity level. The first quarter found Brush jumping out to a 13-10 lead with Angie Davis keeping the Dogs close with her 6 points in the frame. In the second quarter Brush would extend their lead to 26-22 as five Bulldogs found the scoring column to keep things tight. The third quarter was played even at 18 each, with Jordan Hopp leading the Bulldogs in the period with 8 points. The fourth quarter was played even until late. The Bulldogs could only manage 4 of 10 from the line in the quarter while Brush closed it out with 9 of 12 from the line to extend the final margin to 59-50. Brush extends their record to 12-5 on the year while Alliance falls to 0-22.

The Bulldogs had many bright spots beyond just the effort displayed by the nine players. Jordan Hopp would lead the VPS ratings on the night as she contributed 11 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. Unofficial stats had Jordan with 10 blocks but the official Hudl stats showed 4. Game film will be reviewed to solve the disparity. At a minimum this will be Jordan’s second double-double of the year. Fellow senior Payton Weber also recorded her second double-double of the year with 12 points and 15 rebounds. She was also one of five Bulldogs to score above the line on VPS. Sophomore point guard Leyton Schnell rated out 2nd on the VPS scale. She did an outstanding job only committing one turnover on the night against the Brush pressure. Angie Davis contributed her best effort of the year with 13 points and 5 assists. She rated fourth on the VPS scale for the evening. Avah Steggall provided strong minutes and rated third on the VPS contributing her varsity career high six points.

The Bulldogs will be in sub-district action Monday against the top rated Sidney Red Raiders.
