Reflections for the Week of May 8-12

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WNCC, HEMINGFORD, and ALLIANCE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES!

BBDC:

• Received notice of award for a Rural Workforce Housing Fund Grant in the amount of $750,000. With contributions from local businesses and the City of Alliance, we will be overseeing a revolving housing fund of $1,125,000 to bring additional housing to Alliance!

• Helped host the 2nd Annual 5th Grade Career Day at Grandview for 85 students. Shout-out to JM & Associates, The Animal Center, Carnegie Arts Center, WNCC Powerline, Alliance Children’s & Allied Health, Rock Valley Physical Therapy, Alliance Family Dental, Alliance Police Department, Alliance Fire Department, Mrs. Benzel as retired teacher, and UNL Extension staff for making it a successful event! It was a great day despite a handful backing out due to the much needed rain.

• Helped with 5th Grade Mock Interviews at Grandview on Monday

• Participated in the “Thriving Index Report” given by UNL

• Attended Hemingford CRA monthly meeting Wednesday

• BBDC office closed May 16-19 for NEDA Annual Conference in Lincoln

• Perfect Blend is Tuesday, May 23rd @9:15am – BBDC office with Community Action Health Center giving the program

Fire:

• Staff participated in the 5th Grade Career day at Grandview Elementary School.

• Completed preparations to attend the Nebraska State Fire School next week in Grand Island.

• Fire Training Structures cancelled their trip to do repairs on the burn building because of weather.

Community Development:

• May 9 Planning Commission Meeting

o Recommended Councils approval of the One and Six Year Street Plan.

o Recommended approval of the Transportation Component of the proposed Comprehensive Plan.

o Recommended approval of the zoning map designation change between R-1 and R-1a.

Finance:

• Summer Hours began May 1st

• Caselle pre-release check-in meeting. Social Media in the workplace Webinar. WNCC Response Tour meeting. Digital Storage review

• Prepared Quarterly Financial reports

• Entity Registration Updates for Airport and City of Alliance

Utility Department:

• Reset budget billing(through the Month of May by cycle)

• Summer Hours began May 1st

Water/Sewer:

• Shut down water main and did 8 inch tee for Westco tap. Shut down water main on Box Butte on for curb stop replacement

• Took vactor truck to Golf Court pit. Jetted 2 sewer lines

• Set up for Employee luncheon

• Continued work on Lift Station A

• Gutted electric panel at Well 1, installed new VFD motor starter in panel

• Replaced suction hose on pump 2 for 18th and Colorado well

• 30 work orders, 29 locates

• Started list for lead and copper sites for the State

Transit:

• 659 riders

Streets:

• Started sign replacements and updates

• Graded roads, Alley repairs, Pot hole patching

• Cleaned storm drains

Landfill:

• 274 customers

• 317.88 tons

• Smoothed grass pile. Moved bales

• Welded step back on loader. Completed repairs on skid steer

Airport:

• Annual Emergency Plan Review/Training was conducted. Airport staff, Airline, TSA, FBO, Fire Department, and Police Department participated. Thank you all for attending.

• Taxiway/Apron Rehabilitation Project – Taxiway B has all been milled and work for the week is done. The next step in any concrete repair that will be completed next week. Taxiway B will remain closed. Runway 8/26 will be closed from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. any day that construction work is being done. Airport staff inspects that Runway every night before it is opened again.

• Participated in phone conference regarding MALSR system.

• Tumbleweed cleanup from wildlife fence.

• Maintenance on small plow/dump truck completed in preparation for summer. This requires the deicing chemical removed and the system flushed. Training on that process with new employee.

• Service completed on Ford F-150.

• Annual Generator Inspections scheduled for May 30th. Research done on options for lifting generator during leveling process.

• Budget continues to be the focus!

Administration:

• Began summer hours, Monday – Thursday 7:00 am – 5:00 pm, Friday 7:00 am – 11:00 am.

• Tourism announced Bands on the Bricks dates, June 9th, June 23rd, July 7th, July 21st, July 22nd. Line-up to be announced soon!

Electric:

• Lightning strike last Friday evening damaged equipment and caused outage in Lakefield Addition; personnel performed “switching” operations and restored power.

• Replaced damaged equipment and “switched” power back to normal feed this week.

• Performed maintenance and inspection on other areas of Lakefield Addition underground system.

• Installed new metering equipment at Times Herald building.

• Ordered and received new parts for Bower-Shankland scoreboard.

• Assisted Employee Activity Committee by setting up and cleaning up after the employee luncheon to celebrate Public Employees Service Week.

• Repaired/replaced streetlights as needed.

• Moisture on faulty piece of equipment caused lights to blink on Thursday afternoon, equipment cleared from line.

Senior Center:

• Weekly Activities have had significantly more senior attendance and participation.

• Preparing for a recognition dinner that was held in May.

• Meeting on Tuesday, May 16th of the Senior Facility Advisory Board, 10 am at the Senior Center

Knight Museum:

• The museum hosted a two-day training for Alliance Police Department Officers.

• We have welcomed many out of town visitors.

• General building maintenance is being planned for Spring 2023.

• The Knight Museum has on display many beautiful Sunset and Sunrise Photos that were submitted for their photo contest. There is also a display of Nebraska Artists Paintings.

• Lifeline Screening held their medical testing in the basement of the Museum.

• Nebraska Public Service held a meeting in reference to Broadband Service.

• Hosted two graduation parties.

Skyview Golf Course:

• May 6th we had a cleanup day to put things in order for the season. The Golf course is in good shape coming out of the winter months.

• The Golf Course Advisory Board will be meeting next week.

• Cart usage will be determined according to upcoming weather.

• New merchandise is arriving and ready for purchase.

Parks:

• Park employees have started regular weekly mowing. All large park and ballfield irrigation is now running.

• Power washed the swimming pool and cleaned drains in preparation for filling. Staff added crushed concrete to the back entrance of the swimming pool to cut down on erosion and mud.

• Bacteria was added to Laing Lake to clear up the water and reduce algae.

• Rain water was pumped out of the 6th street underpass. The drain on 3rd street underpass sidewalk was also cleared to facilitate drainage.

• Staff started trimming around headstones and replaced some dead trees at the cemetery.

Culture and Leisure Service:

• Big Blue Bay is still accepting registrations for Red Cross Swimming Lessons until May 24.

• Pool passes will be issued starting May 15th from 8 am until 5 pm. Please bring a small picture of each family member as these are photo ID’s. A group family photo will also work since we can make a copy of each face. Fees are:

o Household Pass: $150

o 17 and under: $65

o 18 and older $80

o Lap Swim Only $50

Library:

• Due to safety concerns with roof leaks and the electrical system, the library is closed until further notice.

• We have been busy this week as a team preparing for summer reading registration that begins next week.

• We are very excited to announce that we will be hosting a Farmer’s Market here on the library grounds every Thursday evening from 5-7PM. Watch our Facebook for details!

• Children’s Librarian Cynthia Horn hosted Story time with “Sailing Into Summer” with a Birthday Party, music, craft and more! Dave Ocken was our special guest for Tuesday Story Time.

• Cynthia conducted “All Together Now” Summer Reading with outreach visits to St. Agnes Academy and Head Start classrooms. Her ongoing projects include cataloging new materials, backpack maintenance and updating book displays.

• Technical Services Librarian Emily Nelson updated the website with the latest staff picks, Director’s report, and programming information. She also made the weekly Book Mobile deliveries, processed Interlibrary Loans, and assisted patrons on the computers.

• Adult Services Librarian Nalani Stewart planned out adult summer reading programming, planned out APL Farmers Market details, and cataloged new fiction and nonfiction books for the collection. She also hosted Fiber Arts Club, and Book Club at Highland Park Care Center.

• Clerks Pam Becker and Kris Wilder have been busy with assisting with summer reading preparation and processing new spring titles!
