Public Transit, Streets Department Provide Crucial Services

The City of Alliance is excited to highlight two more departments essential to Building the Best Hometown in America! Under the guidance of Public Works Director Ross Grant, the Streets Department maintains 183 lane miles of streets which includes street sweeping, snow removal, concrete patching, drain clearing, mowing and weed eating. When fully staffed, this department employs one foreman, four maintenance workers, and four seasonal laborers. There are currently two open positions within the Streets Department – Interested parties can find more information about these and other open positions at https://www.cityofalliance.net/jobs.

In 2022 the City funded and oversaw several milling and overlay projects which included, Missouri Avenue, Potash Avenue, Grand Avenue, 24th Street, 10th Street and 3rd Street. In 2023 The Streets fund will be used for pavement rehabilitation projects on Box Butte Avenue, Park Knoll, 14th Street, 12th Street, Grove Avenue and Hammond Avenue.

Also reporting to Director Grant is our local public transit program. Six years ago the City of Alliance took over responsibility for public transit from Box Butte County Transit. With no with no taxis, Uber, or other private transportation options, Public Transit is essential to provide reliable public transportation to our residents. Public Transit provides riders on-call transportation to work, shopping, medical appointments, school and the airport, all at a nominal fee. Transit has three buses and two vans on their fleet, serving around 29,500 riders annually.

The City of Alliance Public Transit team consists of one director and six driver/dispatchers, with multiple positions currently open. Our Public Transit system is made possible through grants, which fund much of this service. This year the Transit team received additional grant funding to upgrade their dispatch software which has improved documentation but more importantly has reduced wait times tremendously.

Public Transit offers rides Monday – Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Their rates are $1 per stop or $5 to the Airport with an advanced reservation. To Schedule a ride with Public Transit, call 762-RIDE (7433) or 761-RIDE (7433).
