Located at 1439 E. Kansas Street, the Alliance Public Landfill collects over 16,500 tons of waste annually. On average the landfill serves 11,673 customers per year. This waste is processed onsite by four employees while two refuse collection drivers work to collect yard waste and refuse from 63 commercial customers and 3283 residential addresses. We would like to tell you a little more about how we handle so much waste each year:
Yard waste is placed into the compost pile where it is broken down, screened through the trommel, and then sold back to the public at a minimal fee. This compost can be used to amend soil to promote plant growth. Woodchips generated from tree trimmings are also available to the public for a minimal fee. For those tree trunks too large to be shredded, the Landfill offers to the public as free firewood, however a signed waiver is required. Make sure to bring your own chainsaw and vehicle to cut and load your own firewood.
Household refuse is dumped onto the “tipping floor” and fed into a baler by a conveyor belt. The bales are stacked in such a way as to build a containment ring around loose loads of non-baleable material. Once the material is built up to the required slope and height it is then covered with dirt creating our own manmade hill!
Tires, metal and oil are the only items our landfill does not process onsite. The landfill often offers tire amnesty where locals can bring tires to the landfill free of charge, courtesy of a state waste reduction & recycling grant. Tires collected at the Landfill are then collected by a company who then processes the tires for recycling. Collections of metal and oil are collected by companies which pay the City of Alliance for them.
