Ogallala Downs Dogs Behind Big Third Quarter

Any hopes of an upset by Alliance over the highly ranked Ogallala Indians on Friday night were quickly dashed in the third period. The visiting Indians outscored the home town Bulldogs 20 to 3 in the third and went on for a 73 to 47 win in boy’s action played at Alliance High School. Down by just 8 points by halftime, the Bulldogs would muster just three points by Tristen Timbers in the third quarter as the Indians pulled away. Alliance’s record now stands at 5 and 8. Ogallala also won the JV game played earlier at Alliance Middle School. The Indians won the junior varsity contest 63 to 26.

Seven early points by Timbers gave Alliance a chance in the opening minutes of the first period. Three points scored by Timbers was followed by two two-point goals that put the Dogs up 7 to 4. Ogallala answered with the contest’s next 9 points to surge ahead 13 to 7 that forced an Alliance time out. It was then the Bulldogs who went on the game’s next run. Getting two point buckets by Seth Meyring, Landen Crowe, and Burt Trevino Alliance tied the score at 13. Later in the opener with the Indians leading by 5, the Bulldogs got an old fashion three-point play by Espen Lanik that cut their deficit to 2 points and a score of 18 to 16. The quarter closed with four more Indian points and another two by Timbers. After one, Ogallala led 22 to 18. The teams would trade points early in the second. A free throw by Filippo Bandera helped Alliance pull within three points. It was answered by four straight Indian points that put the guests ahead 26 to 19. A Crowe trey and a bucket by Timbers counter the Indians run and gave the Bulldogs hope. At the 4-minute mark the Bulldogs got a three by Lanik and bucket by Lexton Salcido to pull within one point at 30 to 29. The final moments saw the Indians increase their margin to nine points by outscoring the Dogs 9 to 2. Another basket by Crowe would account for the lone Alliance score. After 16 minutes of play, Alliance trailed 39 to 31.

Two Indian free throws began play in the third. It was followed by a three ball by Timbers. At the six minute mark Alliance was down by just 7 points at 41 to 34. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs the rest of the period was all Indians. Ogallala would shut out Alliance while scoring the game’s next 18 points. Heading to the fourth the Indians were ahead 59 to 34. The Indians’ margin would then grow to 30 points in the first minutes of the final period. Ogallala would score the game’s next 5 points as their lead would increase to 64 to 34. Another Timber’s three ended the run and a basket by Crowe at the five minute mark made the score 66 to 39. The final stages saw seven straight points by the Indians and back to back threes by Salcido. Bulldog Trevor Zurn finished the game with a bucket as the Indians went on for the 73 to 47 win.
