Big Early Run Lifts Crusaders Past Sioux County

Fresh off winning their second straight Panhandle Conference Championship the Alliance St. Agnes boy’s basketball team was back in action Saturday with a home contest with the Sioux County Warriors. The Crusaders used a big run in the first half and easily downed the guests 45 to 13. Alliance’s record now stands at 7 and 2. St. Agnes also got the victory in the JV matchup. The Crusaders defeated Harrison 30 to 16.

The first period saw St. Agnes get an early score from Jackson Devlin to take the lead at 2 to 0. Harrison came back with a bucket of their own to tie the match at 2. From there it was all St. Agnes. The Crusaders would score the game’s next 30 points. The run began with first quarter scores from Crusader Caysen Robertson, Devlin, and Grayson Dibrito. After one period of play Alliance led 8 to 2. Sixteen straight second period points gave the Crusaders a huge lead at halftime. The second started with a Tanner Salcido goal which was followed by another Devlin bucket and 2 two pointers by Cisco Cody as the Alliance margin grew to 16 to 2. Four more Crusader hoops ended the half with the hosts leading 24 to 2. Scoring right before half for Alliance were: Salcido, Robertson, and 4 points by Dixon Bair.

St. Agnes continued their fine play in period #3. The Crusaders pushed their advantage to 30 at 32 to 2 with scores by Salcido, Robertson, Phoenix Red Nest, and Danny Jelinek. The quarter came to a close with SC tallying 3 straight. Heading to the fourth SA led 32 to 5. Alliance would again outscore their guests in the finale. St. Agnes tacked on 13 points in the fourth with the Warriors netted 8. Nine players would score for Alliance with Devlin leading the way with 10 points. Robertson had 8 while 6 apiece were Cody, Bair, and Salcido. Scoring 4 was Dibrito while adding 2 each were Red Nest and Jelinek. Ending with 1 was Collins.

St. Agnes was solid on both ends at the start of the JV contest. The Crusaders would score seven points in the first quarter while shutting out the Warriors. Red Nest had Alliance’s first four points to help the hosts gain the early lead, The period closed with a free throw by Tatum Devlin and a Collin’s basket. After one SA led 7 to 0. The second started with another goal by Red Nest as SA built a 9 to 0 lead. Midway through the quarter, Sioux County made their first bucket to pull within 7. Another Warrior hoop got the visitors to 9 to 4, but Alliance countered with the quarter’s final 5 points. A three point play by Tatum Devlin plus another basket by Red Nest boasted the St. Agnes lead to 14 to 4 with the teams going to halftime.

The pace of the game picked up in the third with both team’s offense finding success. St. Agnes would score 9 points quarter three while the Warriors had 8. Another goal by Red Nest started the scoring for Alliance. The teams would then trade scores with Mason Conyers and Tatum Devlin accounting for the Crusader points. Conyers would tally 3 points in the period to lead Alliance. The quarter ended with a Jelinek bucket and St. Agnes out in front 23 to 12. Six straight St. Agnes points helped the Crusaders maintain their margin in final quarter of play. Two pointers by Red Nest, Jelinek, and Emerson Trumble pushed the Warrior deficit to 17 at 29 to 12. Twelve Red Nest points led the Crusader attack while Tatum Devlin pitched in with 7 Jelinek contributed 4 with Conyers closing with 3. Rounding out the scoring with 2 each were Collins and Trumble.
