Chadron State College’s student-led day of community service known as The Big Event (TBE) will be April 13.
Graduate Assistant Kinsey Smith with TBE said common jobsite tasks include raking leaves, prepping gardens for planting, removing litter, and painting. Volunteers also visit with residents of retirement communities and beautify city parks. Due to liability, volunteers cannot use power tools or enter homes.
Community residents interested in hosting a job site should apply through the online form when registration opens Friday, March 1. TBE volunteers complete an average of 50 job sites each year. The registration process will close March 31.
Smith said volunteer applications also open on Friday, March 1 and will close on April 5.
She said she thinks it is important for CSC students and employees to show gratitude to the community by volunteering.
“I come back every single year because I love the mission of The Big Event. I love getting out into the community and getting to say thank you to all the people who help support our sports and our academics. That’s my favorite part, seeing everybody on the big day helping each other out,” Smith said.
The Big Event originated at Texas A&M University in 1982 and now occurs at 125 campuses in the US. CSS began the tradition in 2013 with more than 400 volunteers at 15 job sites.
