Reflections for the Week of May 13-17

Police:

∙ Completed cleanup project at the Annex building.

∙ Attended the City-Wide Cleanup Day planning meeting.

∙ Met with HR regarding upcoming police officer interviews.

∙ Conducted interviews for Dispatcher.

∙ Attended the WING Task Force meeting.

∙ Moving forward with MACH software installation which will allow dispatchers to see where the officers are on a map in real time. This will allow us to get help to officers quickly in the event of an emergency. The cost of this software is minimal and will be covered by unused Rural Crime Grant funds.

HR:

∙ Scheduled and attended interviews for open positions.

∙ Monthly WNHRA Meeting attended by current president, Carla Mayhew.

∙ HR is focusing on Seasonal Hires this week and next, including: planning with department heads and supervisors, scheduling start dates, launching and verifying onboarding packets, collecting and verifying IDs, direct deposit information, account setup, employment certificates for minor workers, and communicating with applicants and new employees to ensure a smooth process to the start of our season.

Airport:

∙ Taxiway/Apron project began on Monday with an anticipated completion date of May 31st, this will depend on weather conditions.

∙ Completed self-inspection of construction areas training for airport staff. Construction briefing training was conducted by airport staff to engineers, contractors, and any subcontractors. ∙ Met and gave a tour to Jeremy Borrell who is the Director of the Aeronautics division of the NDOT.

∙ Participated in the monthly NOTAM manager training.

∙ Worked on updating the Airport Certification Manual with new wildlife permits. ∙ Prepared training for next week for the annual Airport Emergency Plan Review/Training. ∙ Mowing this week consisted of the terminal area, Taxiway A and Taxiway C. ∙ Worked on wildlife control of the safety areas.

∙ Maintenance was completed on the little mower, repairs done of the Hustler mower, and cleaned the Loader.

∙ Maintenance staff tested washing a section of the centerline of Runway 12/30, it was quickly discovered that if the seal coat project doesn’t take place staff will need to paint centerline prior to winter months.

Water /Sewer:

∙ Completed 15 locates.

∙ Completed 24 work orders.

∙ Collected weekly airport water samples.

∙ Built go-kart for Library.

∙ Cleaned 28 heads, put new drop on, cleaned sand traps on sewer pivots which are now running for the season.

∙ Repaired overhead door on Cody Ave shop.

∙ Fixed chlorine leaks at wellfield.

∙ Turned off water for Grand lakes mobile home plumber.

∙ Jetted storm sewer on 2nd St.

∙ Jetted 5000 ft of sanitary sewer.

∙ Obtained cycle 3 radio reads.

∙ 318 total radios installed to date.

Streets:

∙ Replaced damaged parts on unit 919.

∙ Graded Sweetwater and 12th St.

∙ Ongoing pothole repair.

∙ Crack sealing on Laramie, Niobrara, Sweetwater, Yellowstone.

∙ Measured 2 properties for sidewalk share program.

∙ Concrete work on Countryside Lane.

∙ Replaced yield sign on Sweetwater.

∙ Replaced stop sign in Lakefield.

∙ 1 employee attended financial training.

Transit:

∙ 736 riders this week.

Landfill:

∙ New Scale installed and working!

∙ 170 customers this week.

∙ 220 tons of refuse this week.

∙ Ongoing truck, baler repairs.

∙ Moved dirt cover.

∙ Ongoing maintenance on baler, and heavy equipment.

Electric:

∙ Continue to make progress on the three-phase line extension project on CR 63 south of Madison Road.

∙ Started a three-phase line extension project on Valley Road, west of Highway 385. ∙ All personnel attended monthly NECC safety meeting.

∙ Assisted Parks Department with backstop repairs at Bower ballfield.

∙ Connected service wires for new service on Flack Avenue building.

∙ Installed new LED streetlights in Lakefield area.

∙ Work continues on three-phase line build on CR 62 and Country Club Road. ∙ Attended ACE/MEAN meetings in Kearney.

RSVP:

∙ RSVP had 11 volunteers in the community this week.

∙ Continue to provide dine in and deliver meals for area seniors.

∙ Hosted several card parties, bingo and bunco events.

Golf:

∙ Junior golf sign-up is going well. Contact the pro shop if you are interested.

∙ Hosted a Callaway fitting day on Thursday and had record attendance and sales. ∙ Course clean-up is scheduled for this Saturday. Volunteers will assist staff with getting the course ready for the 2024 golf season.

∙ Brian and crew have been working had to ensure the course continues to be in great shape. Parks:

∙ Worked on reassembling, cleaning, and starting up pumps after replacing gaskets on the sand filters at the pool.

∙ Started filling the fountain after completing work on the fill line and water softener. ∙ Completed seasonal interviews and worked with HR to coordinate start dates. ∙ Mowed all ballfields for tournaments this weekend.

∙ Picked up grass clippings on the ballfields and cemetery grounds.

∙ Started trimming the cemetery for Memorial Day.

∙ Installed new lifeguard chairs and platforms, repaired the umbrella frames and installed the diving board.

∙ 4 funerals this week.

Museum:

∙ We hosted five graduation parties and want to congratulate all of the 2024 Alliance & Hemingford graduates. We wish you success in your future.

∙ Hosted a regional Law Enforcement training.

∙ There are many new, fun gift ideas in the Newberry Gift Shop. Remember us when you need Alliance & Carhenge souvenirs.

∙ The Museum Partners met for their quarterly meeting.

∙ We want to welcome Chip Tschacher, who was appointed to fill a vacancy to the Museum Board. ∙ The APS Second graders enjoyed a walk through the Museum for a field trip. ∙ Staff assisted callers and visitors with family and local history research.

Library:

∙ It has been a very busy time this week preparing for our annual Summer Reading program. Registration begins Monday! This year we have some exceptional prizes for the kids that include a chance to win an adventure vehicle! A very special thank you to Bob Swedeen and the crew at the COA Utility Facility who helped put together the grand prize for grades 3-8. The prize for that age group is a Jeep Go-Kart that is valued at over $2,000! The Alliance Public Library Foundation purchased all the vehicles for this year’s event, so a big thank you to them!

∙ Adult Services Librarian Nalani Stewart cataloged a new book club kit and new materials, and hosted the Monday Night Mystery, Crime After Crime, and Highland Park Care Center Book Clubs, and created new Summer Reading Displays.

∙ Children’s Librarian Cynthia Horn held Outreach visits with K-2nd grade classrooms at Immanuel Lutheran School and with family event of Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska. She also had four classrooms of 2nd graders from Emerson Elementary visit the library on their field trip, where she shared summer reading information and gave a library tour. Cynthia’s Story Times featured Summer Sparkle, and included summer safety with Officer Sherlock, decorating crowns, and a birthday party. She also organized all materials for “Adventure Begins At Your Library” Summer Reading, and updated displays, organized and delivered Book Mobile items.

∙ Library Clerks Pam Becker and Stephanie Hamilton have been busy getting supplies ready for summer reading registration, which begins on Monday, May 20th!

Administration:

∙ Coordination meeting for city-wide cleanup

∙ Local elections were held as part of the State Primary election Tuesday. Congratulations to Councilwoman Tacy Liptack who will fill the vacancy left by Mike Dafney. Councilwoman Liptack will be sworn on at the first Council Meeting in June.

∙ Held a class for employees on Personal Finance and Debt

∙ Virtually attended the Highway Commission meeting

∙ Virtually attended the HomeNE seminar on Tax Increment Financing

∙ Continued work on FY25 Budget. Planning and Zoning meeting for their consideration of capital improvement project recommendations to the City Council is being rescheduled.

∙ Preparations for Independence Day Fireworks show

∙ Participated in meetings for Bands on the Bricks and Heritage Days
