Flags Retired During Ceremony at Sallows

Members of the American Legion hosted a Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Sallows Military Museum on Flag Day, June 14, allowing people to bring their unserviceable Flags to be disposed of in the proper way, and giving citizens an opportunity to pay their proper respects to the Flag.

The ceremony began at 9 a.m., Friday, with Legionnaires presenting the flags for inspection before deeming them to be unserviceable and officially retiring them by consigning them to a “clean and purging flame.”

Each flag was then inspected before it was added to the flames. As part of the inspection, some flags were determined to still be serviceable, and were given to the people gathered in attendance.
