July 13, 1894

If he will accept the position at a salary of $1,000 per year, Prof. A.H. Monroe, A.M., of Hoopeston, Ill., will be the superintendent of Alliance schools for the ensuing year. At a meeting of the board of education Monday night a majority of the members so decided, but only agreed allow him the salary asked by Mr. Hull, of Shelton, and granting him the privilege of employing his assistant, who is to be competent to furnish musical instruction.

July 14, 1899

All patrons of the school who are interested in the little park on the grounds will feel indignant when they hear that 125 feet of the hose purchased for use on the grounds, has been removed by some one, who had no right to do so. It is a strange thing that the property of the public, and which is used to improve the appearance of the public grounds should be molested.

July 12, 1904

About 170,000 pounds of wool, or five cars, were loaded and shipped from Alliance last week, being purchased from various nearby sheepmen by Messrs. Wm. James and H.G. Warrick. We did not obtain the amount marketed by each raiser.

It is now a certainty that a County fair and race meeting will be held in Alliance this fall. The date will be fixed at a meeting of the officers to be held in the city hall at 7:30 this evening. At a well attended meeting of society held Wednesday evening. The following officers were elected: President, George D. Darling. Vice President, James A. Hunter. Secretary, Richard Waters. Treasurer, Chas. W. Brennan.

The safe and sane and likewise quiet Fourth was exemplified to the satisfaction of its most ardent admirer. The early morning trains, the autoes and the wagons carried the people to their favorite places of recreation and Alliance, or that small part of it that was compelled to remain at home, spent the day in solemn quietness.

July 4, 1919

The $1.00 Alliance Derby, and the best race on the program, will be held Friday afternoon, July Fourth. This decision was reached by the officials at a meeting this morning after the heavy rain. The entire Thursday afternoon program will be held Friday afternoon and the Friday program will be held Saturday afternoon. This ensures those who wanted to see the Derby an opportunity to visit the frack Friday afternoon when nearly all places of business will be closed.

The Anderson-Srader carnival, which opened a week’s engagement here last night, was given permission to occupy Box Butte avenue from First to Third street by the council and city manager, following the presentation of a petition signed generally by the business men of lower Box Butte, with several additional names from merchants outside of the carnival zone.

I’m the best woman you ever had in this jail,” the sharp-eyed blonde woman told the Night Officer George Barnum Saturday night when she was incarcerated at the police station. She told the officer numerous other things but they cannot appear in print. It all happened when a doggy Nash coupe with yellow wheels was seen cutting some queer capers on the main avenue of the city.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Keane and their baby, of northeast of Alliance, were able to return to their home today after receiving treatment at the hospital overnight for injuries sustained in a head-on collision of cars yesterday afternoon at the East Tenth street corner on the Chadron highway.

Assuming as an initial premise that everyone that files a tax schedule is absolutely honest, you own neither a watch nor a clock, and must rely on the sun for computing time unless you’re one of the lucky persons in every 25 in Box Butte county that boasts a timepiece. Believe it or not, for the 11,861 persons in the county, shown by the last census, there were only 474 watches and clocks, including all those on banks and in stores and offices.

In his search for a man wanted on bad-check charge Sheriff Dan Hoppes tried the various jails, and there he found his quarry. If he had tried two nights in succession, he would still have found his man behind the bars, but in two different localities.

Preliminary estimates of the number of people in the sixth School District, including the City of Alliance, show approximately 8,360 persons, according to H. R. Partridge, school superintendent. Mr. Partridge made this statement at the Thursday luncheon meeting of the retail committee of the Chamber of Commerce.

The 2-wheel trailer above breaks loose from a truck and rammed a pickup at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, miraculously missing dense traffic on the street at the time. Chris Guy, driving a Plains Implement Ce. Truck, was pulling the trailer west on East Third Street in the 200 block when the accident occurred.

Alliance showed the biggest increase in retail sales over last year of any city in Nebraska during the month of April, the July issue of Business in Nebraska, published by the University of Nebraska Department of Business Research reports.

The Alliance City Council adopted the 1964-65 City budged Thursday night, calling for an expenditure of $452,239. This amounts to a decrease from last year’s $487,839. A 17-page report was submitted to the Council by City Manager R. W. Laing.

Box Butte County charges that State Tax Commissioner Murrell McNeil is in error in proposing an 84 percent increase in the valuation of its agricultural lands. Laurice Margheim, former Box Butte County attorney now in private practice, has been retained by the County Board of Commissioners to aid in taking a rebuttal of the proposal before representatives of the Tax Commissioner at Scottsbluff Thursday.

July 9, 1974

The Alliance Municipal power plant is temporarily running on coal after natural gas service was interrupted by Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Co. at midnight Monday. Although City manager Robert Placek was notified that the power plant could go back onto gas this morning, he said it will remain on coal for a minimum of 36 hours since there are 13,140 tons of coal on line to be burned.

Limited non-agricultural allocations availability of gasoline and a cutback in tourist travel are beginning to have an impact on the local scene. Black plastic covers, solemn as death hoods, have shrouded gasoline pumps at the Alliance Consumers Co-op station since last Thursday.

After a marathon four hour meeting Thursday night, the Alliance City Council voted 4-0 to create an airport authority which would put the operations of the Municipal Airport in the hands of the newly created five-member board.

Despite temperatures past the 100 degree mark both Saturday and Sunday, officials say the 1989 Heritage Days celebration was a success. The highlights of Saturday’s events was the Heritage Days Parade which was sponsored by The Alliance Times-Herald.

An Alliance man accused of pulling a gun in a Box Butte County courtroom was bound over to the district court Thursday. Ronald Lee Jacobs, 43, faces felony counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, resisting arrest, and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

By next summer, county officials will move into remodeled quarters, yet Box Butte General Hospital administrator Terry Padden hopes to occupy the Slagle Building’s basement as soon as possible. The Box Butte County Commissioners addressed several agenda items concerning the Slagle Building during their regular meeting this morning, July 6.

A bull snake got into the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) substation west of Alliance and caused a short circuit at about noon Tuesday, resulting in a brief power outage. Electrical Superintendent Larry Heinrich said the power in Alliance blinked, but one of the feeders did not come back on, as it should have.

After discussion about concerns of fair treatment by the city of Alliance, the city council voted in favor of transferring a budget authority of $30,000 from the Central Park tennis court project to fund improvements to the Rolling Prairie Disc Golf Course.
