Secretary of State encourages Nebraskans to Serve as Poll Workers

In honor of National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, Secretary of State Bob Evnen is thanking Nebraska’s poll workers and encouraging more Nebraskans to serve as poll workers. National Poll Worker Recruitment Day was August 1, 2024.

“Nebraska is continually recognized as a leader in election procedures and security, and that is due in large part to our county election officials and their poll workers,” Secretary of State Bob Evnen said. “We could not conduct our elections smoothly and independently without the work of thousands of Nebraskans who step up and serve their communities as poll workers.”

More than 9,000 Nebraskans are needed to staff polling sites and county election offices to ensure efficient election operations. Historically, retired Nebraskans have filled most of the state’s poll worker positions. Secretary Evnen is encouraging younger voters to fill the gaps left by older poll workers who cannot serve at the polls anymore.

Poll workers are paid for their service on Election Day and for the training provided beforehand. They must be registered to vote in their respective counties, unless they are younger than 18. Nebraskans as young as 16 years old can serve as poll workers. Interested Nebraskans who would like to learn more about becoming a poll worker should reach out to their county election commissioner or county clerk.
