Many of us get our weather forecasts from the one media source or another. Some turn to the TV, some read it from the paper, and others check it out on the internet or a weather app. So what if you didn’t have access to one of these handy dandy weather outlets?
Well, here are a few ways to make a short term forecast. In the spring or summer, if surface winds are from the south or southwest, clouds are building to the west, and the air temperature is warm and humid, it could mean that a cold front with t-storms is approaching from the west.
If the surface winds are from the east or southeast, cool air is in place and clouds are thickening and lowering, this could mean there is a warm front approaching. If that’s the case, there is a possibility of precipitation with 12 hours and it may become windy. Now if its winter and it’s a clear night out with relatively calm winds and the humidity is low, you can expect a very cold night due to radiational cooling.
But if the skies are cloudy and you have a slight to moderate wind you can expect temperatures to be a little warmer due to the mixing of the atmosphere and the re-radiation of infrared energy back to the surface.
