November 23, 1894

Thu public is invited to the grand ball to be given next Thanksgiving evening by the Alliance Concert-Dance orchestra in the opera house. Tickets will be 75 cents and supper or oysters may be procured in the council room of the Syndicate block at a cost of 25 cents per person, of one of the ladies’ societies.

November 24, 1899

A stranger bought a ticket at the ticket office Thursday night of last week and carelessly placed his pocketbook, containing $40 in bills, in an outside pocket while he boarded the train. When he reached for his purse, after finding a seat in the car, he discovered that it was missing.

November 18, 1904

About sixty persons from Box Butte county attended the declamatory contest at Crawford last Friday evening, and a royal good time was reported by those in attendance. In the oratorical class Earl Mallery easily took the first place, for the writer heard not one comment to the contrary.

Mrs. Watkins and daughter entertained about 25 of their lady friends Tuesday afternoon. A delightful afternoon was spent playing “500.” At the close of the game Mrs. Glen Hampton was found to have the highest score. She received a souvenir fork.

An athletic carnival and sports program is being arranged by the fire boys to be held in the opera house Dec. 18. The proceeds will go to fire department. The affair will be under the direction of Dr. Hand who is now coaching the boys in several stunts of interest.

E. I. Gregg has sold his farm of 58 acres located just east of the city to M. A. Brown of Marple, for a consideration of $10,000. Since Mr. Gregg bought the place he has built a fine new house and other modern improvements. Mr. Brown expects to move to his place at once.

November 21, 1924

Gasoline prices took an upward turn Thursday morning, and all stations in the city are now dispensing the precious fluid at 17 ½ cents, although the figures on some of the pumps read “18c.” This is explained by dealers as due to the fact that it is impossible to make change for a half-cent.

Alliance Lions club members were boys again during two hours of fun and gay entertainment which was equally enjoyed by a large group of guests, who were boys of the city and most of them sons of the lions, at the father-and-son banquet of the organization at the Alliance hotel last Tuesday evening.

The Alliance high school auditorium room was crowded with students Wednesday afternoon at the performance of magic by John W. Frye, lyceum entertainer. As the third number in the year’s series, Frye exhibited a humorous and interesting show of magic. He was engaged through the Midwest Assemblies company of Lincoln.

Weird early-morning mirages lasting from 20 minutes to a half-hour have been reported visible against the hills southwest of town on two or three mornings recently. The mirages were first reported by men working in the dispatcher’s office at the Burlington depot.

Miss Rosalie Rust of Alliance is serving in France with the psychological warfare division under command of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Miss Rust, daughter of Mrs. Ted Green of Cheyenne, Wyo., and H. A. Rust of Alliance is a graduate of St. Agnes academy, and was employed in the office of war information in Washington, D. C., before volunteering for overseas service.

November 25, 1949

More than a half ton of candy and peanuts have been bought by the Alliance Chamber of Commerce for Santa Claus to distribute to youngsters here Dec. 3. And there’s more where that came from. Saturday, Dec. 3, is the date set for the official opening of Christmas shopping in Alliance. Santa Claus will arrive here by special train at 10:30 a.m.

The Alliance City Schools will take part in the state-wide Save-The-Children “Bundle Week” drive to collect used clothing for needy children. Supt. W. A. Schindler said today. The drive which is part of the thirteenth annual Children’ Clothing Crusade, will take place on December 6 and will last five days.

November 17, 1959

Frontier Air Lines will cancel several Nebraska flights Jan. 1. The airline said lack of patronage is the reason. Alliance apparently would not be hurt as much as some other points since two evening flights from Alliance to Denver depart within an hour and a half of one another. One flight stops at Alliance enroute from Omaha to Denver, the other from Bismarck, N. D., to Denver. Alliance sources weren’t sure which of these was being eliminated.

Nebraska services for crippled children will hold a clinic Saturday at the multi-purpose room in Central School. The doctors will begin examining patients at 8 a.m. The orthopedic team will include Frank J. Iwersen, MD, Harold R. Horn, MD and P. Wayne Marsh, MD, pediatrician.

A ‘big’ contest sponsored by Neuswangers of Alliance has come up with some almost-unbelievable specimens. A 21-pound, 4-ounce sugar beet entered by Lou Skoglund; a 4-pound, 9-ounce potato entered by Diana Mundt; a 13-inch ear of corn in the “big ear corn” division entered by Adolph Bauer; and a 13-inch ear of corn entered by Dwayne Ackerman in the “novelty corn” division.

Nebraska’s Department of Economic Development (DED) has projected population for Box Butte Count in 1989 to be around 15,000. The population of the county according to the official 1970 Census was 10,094.

A major blizzard driven by 40-mile-an-hour winds is howling across a wide region today including the Nebraska Panhandle, and Alliance appears to be bearing the full brunt. Streets and highways were drifted shut today and travel, mainly by 4-wheel-drive vehicles was minimal.

The kick-off to a campaign for playground improvement was announced this week by the Invest in Play and Leisure for Alliance Youth Committee (I PLAY). The group was formed by interested citizens to raise funds to make significant improvement to our park playgrounds.

Alliance boy scouts of America Troop 216 members, Josh Bishop and Nick Benigno, in the Lakefield Addition along with the Alliance High School Student Council and various groups and clubs, distributed plastic bags yesterday for their annual food drive. Addition bags will be passed out this evening with pickup tomorrow.

About 25 business owners from communities throughout the region attended the Western Nebraska Tourism Coalition (WNTC) meeting at the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center. Members of the coalition work together to exchange ideas, voice business and community concerns, and offer a shared approach for local and regional marketing.

Residents in the area of 12th Street and Missouri Avenue find there are now new stop signs controlling the previously uncontrolled intersections. The primary reason for the change was because of several severe accidents that have occurred in some of these intersections in the past few months.
