Lady Crusaders Slow Down Longhorns 36 to 14

On Saturday, the Alliance St. Agnes Academy junior high basketball team traveled to Hyannis for a match up with the Longhorns. The Crusaders outscored the hosts in every period and went on for a 36 to 14 win. With the victory, St. Agnes goes to three and one for the year. Alliance’s big quarter was the third as the guests put 11 points in the scoring column while hold the Horns to just 2 points. Leading the offense for the Academy was Reese Armstrong who netted 13 points. Overall, SA had a nice balance offense with 6 players in the scorebook. Hyannis would then win the JV game. The Longhorns posted a 10 to 2 win in a 2 quarter battle. Alliance’s junior varsity squad falls to 2 and 2 on the year.

Alliance was strong on both sides in the opener. SA held the Longhorns to just one score while netting 9 points of their own. Four Armstrong points in the quarter gave the Academy the early advantage. Crusaders Maslin Breen and Penn Vergil added points in the period as St. Agnes grabbed a 9 to 2 lead after one quarter of play. In the second, the Crusaders got 6 points by Quinn Robertson to increase their margin. Two free throws by Vergil and an Aubree Shrewsbury basket gave the visitors a 19 to 8 lead at halftime.

St. Agnes continued their terrific play in the third on both sides. The Crusaders limited Hyannis to just 2 points while scoring 11. Three 2 pointers plus a three by Armstrong kept the Horns from making a comeback. Free throws by Robertson and Vergil pushed the Hyannis deficit at 30 to 10 after three periods of play. In the finale, play was even. Buckets by Alliance’s Alexis Shelmadine, Robertson, and Vergil accounted for the Crusader points. Final Alliance 36 Hyannis 14
