Eight three pointers by Gering powered the guests past Alliance 62 to 46 in a ball game played Friday. The matchup was the first game for both teams. With the defeat, AHS starts the year with a 0 and 1 record. The second quarter was key for the visitors as Gering would outscore Alliance 18 to 5 in garnering the victory. Junior Espen Lanik was the Bulldogs top scorer with 14 points while Alliance senior Seth Meyring tallied 10 points. Down at the Alliance Middle School, a thrilling JV game was played earlier in the night. Alliance made their throws down the stretch and edged Gering 63 to 58. Clutch fourth period points by Freshmen Creighton Fritzler and Devonte Taylor helped Alliance get the nice win.
From the start it looked like to would a big night for Alliance. An early three by Meyring began the scoring. It was followed by a three ball by Alliance’s Payton Boyer and goal by Lanik as AHS surged ahead 8 to 5. Two free throws by Boyer ensued and midway through the period Alliance led 10 to 7. The game’s next 5 point were scored by the hosts. Free throws by Bulldog Braeden Clarke and Meyring along with a three pointer by Alliance’s Lexton Salcido gave Alliance a big lead at 15 to 7. Unfortunately, the final moments of the opening period went to Gering. The visitors tallied the last 9 points and the quarter ended with Alliance down 16 to 15. In period #2, Lanik had a hoop that put the Dogs back in front at 17 to 16 but a big run by Gering followed. The guests scored 8 in a row and gain control at 24 to 17. A three by Lanik briefly stopped the spree, but the half came to an end with 10 consecutive points by Gering. After 16 minutes of action, Alliance was down 34 to 20.
Control of the game continued to go Gering’s way in the third. Alliance would get early buckets by Meyring and Clarke to keep it close but back to back three pointers by Gering kept the Dogs behind. At the 3 minute mark, the Gering lead stood at 45 to 24. A goal by Boyer closed the Alliance scoring in the period with Gering out in front 46 to 26. Twenty fourth period points by Alliance helped the hosts stay in striking distance. The scoring began with a two pointer by Boyer and a trey by Lanik. Midway through the finale, AHS ran off 7 points in a row with Meyring, Lanik, and Clarke accounting for the Bulldog tallies. Still down by 20. Alliance got consecutive threes by Clarke and Lanik to make the score 58 to 44. The contest concluded with Alliance’s Riley Best scoring and Gering winning the game 62 to 46.
