I know many of you are thinking that’s the craziest idea in the world, considering how much snow we usually get around here! Fear not, making your own snow is not a very cheap thing to do, so we won’t have everybody going out later this year adding to the drifts.
About the only people who actually do make their own snow are in the mountains on the ski slopes. In the beginning of the skiing season, it doesn’t always snow regularly and towards the end of the winter months into spring, snow can also be elusive so extra snow is sometimes made. So, how’s it done? Well, a snow making machine, of course!
Simply put, water is pumped into these snow making machines and then to make the snow, the water is turned into very small droplets and shot into the freezing air. To make sure that this water is changed into snow and not just little ice BB’s, the snow making machines add what’s called ice nuclei to the water. This helps in the snow making process.
So, you say that you want to see snow all year long in your backyard? Well, you’re in luck! Nowadays you can buy smaller versions of these snow making machines and be in the Christmas spirit all year long. Good luck during the summer, though!

Forecast discussion for the week ahead:
A lull in significant weather is setting up across much of the central plains which means the threat for any kind of significant winter weather doesn’t look likely for the next several days. We may have to wait until the second half of the month for any more moisture. As for temperatures, Arctic air is bottled up in Canada for now so we should see near normal temperatures for the foreseeable future.
