Services for Mental Health or Substance Use Challenges are Available for All Nebraskans in a Crisis Moment

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division of Behavioral Health (DBH) maintains several providers in each Regional Behavioral Health Authority who provide same day scheduling and walk-in access services for substance use or mental health challenges.

Both adults and children can utilize same day scheduling services or walk-in services during a time of crisis. For Same Day Scheduling services, call the behavioral health provider to make an appointment on the same day. Or if you need more immediate assistance, some clinics provide options for walk-in appointments.

Support in a local area can be found on the dhhs.ne.gov/SameDay webpage. Providers for mental health or substance use treatments are listed by region with hours of operation, address, and contact information. The page also lists definition of the services. Below is a map of the Behavioral Health Regions.

Dr. Thomas Janousek, Director of DHHS DBH emphasizes, “Same Day Services are essential for getting people the immediate help that they need and makes an impact on behavioral health access issues across our state.”

Same Day Scheduling support can include initial intakes for outpatient treatment which will provide access to a therapist who can conduct treatment planning or provide therapeutic support. Clinics offer services for individuals with Medicaid, private insurance, and have options for individuals who may not be eligible for Medicaid.

Services offered across the state include but are not limited to:

  • Crisis Response: Immediate care to support someone in a mental health or substance use crisis, using the walk-in or mobile response and creating a plan to address their immediate needs.

  • Initial Intake Assessments: A detailed evaluation to understand a person’s symptoms, strengths, and treatment needs. This helps to see if they meet the criteria for a mental health or substance use diagnosis and plan next steps for treatment.

  • Outpatient therapy: Includes individual, group or family therapy.
