As the legislative session continues, I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent District 47 here at the Nebraska State Capitol. Recently, I had the privilege of attending and speaking at a Nebraska Public Affairs Chamber event, where I was asked some thoughtful questions about my journey so far in the Senate. One notable conversation centered around the fact that, as a new senator, I didn’t introduce a large number of bills my first session. I feel this is a good thing, as it gives me the space to truly understand the complexity of my new role as the legislative process unfolds.
I shared with attendees that new senators have a lot of learning to do; this isn’t a sprint. It’s essential to grasp the responsibilities of our work before diving into the deep end. My priority is to focus on the policies that need addressing, rather than chasing headlines or rushing to introduce legislation. I’m spending my time processing information, soaking up knowledge, and collaborating with other senators to ensure I can serve you to the best of my ability.
Another point that came up during my discussion at the event was my previous experience serving on the Sidney City Council. I shared the story of the workforce housing units in Sidney, which have had a significant impact on our community. In 2023, the Sidney City Council unanimously approved a resolution to apply for a rural workforce housing grant. This development has not only provided much-needed housing for workers but also played a crucial role in driving economic growth in Cheyenne County. This project has boosted our local economy by drawing more businesses to the area and subsequentially creating new employment opportunities for workers. This is one of the many instances that inspired me to pursue a position with the Nebraska Legislature in an effort to continue to grow the communities within our district.
As your senator, I remain focused on working with my colleagues to bring meaningful change to our district and our state. Economic growth, especially through initiatives like workforce housing, is vital for the long-term prosperity of our communities.
Thank you for your continued trust and support as I navigate my first year in the Legislature.
