Easter Approaches

With Easter coming up this weekend, I’m sure we are all hoping for a nice day! Over the years there have been plenty of Easters that have been just about right with temperatures in the low 70s and sunny skies. But areas around the country have also seen its share of severe weather on Easter. For instance, several years ago in the year 2000 there was a tornado outbreak in Louisiana and Texas on Easter Sunday. Most of the tornadoes were EF-1 to EF-3 in size and the extent of the damage was mainly seen in Louisiana. No deaths occurred because of this storm, mainly because of early warnings, but there were some injuries. A major tornado outbreak also occurred on Easter Sunday back in 1913 in Omaha. While details are sketchy because of how long ago it was, it’s estimated that the tornadoes caused anywhere from $4 to $10 million in damage to almost 2,000 homes that were damaged and another 800 that were completely leveled. Warnings for tornadoes were almost non-existent back in the early 1900s so it’s not surprising that the death toll was high. Estimated total deaths are in the low 100’s to near 200 people on Easter Sunday back in 1913.

Forecast discussion for the week ahead:

A couple of cold fronts will move through as we head into the weekend which will do a couple of things. They will keep us a little cooler than average and bring us a few chances for some rain. If the precipitation happens overnight, we may see a few snow showers mix in, as well. We’ll warm back up as we head into next week.
