Midnight Sun

A fairly odd thing is happening way up north right now. Well, not odd for them, but it’s something that we don’t get to see in this part of the world. This is the time of year that areas in the Arctic Circle are getting 24 hours of daylight. In other words, the sun doesn’t set. So how is this possible? Well, we can blame it on the tilt of the earth. The earth tilts in such a way that as we head into the summer months, we here in Nebraska experience longer days because we get pointed more and more towards the sun. The further north you go, the more daylight you’re going to get until you get to the Arctic Circle where they are now experiencing 24 hours of it. So why aren’t they warming up with all of this sun? It’s not really a “warming” sun. The sun is so low in sky that the rays of sun can’t really do a lot of warming. It is the warmest time of year for them but average highs are still only in the 40s. With this almost three months of straight sunlight there has to be a downfall, right? Indeed there is, in the winter people in the Arctic don’t get to see the sun for almost three months!
