Hamel Handles Gothenburg as Navy Squad Advances in District Play

Day 2 of the Class B 6 district tournament featured a game between the Alliance Junior Navy club and the Post 64 squad from Gothenburg. A strong pitching effort from Spartan Kyler Hamel powered the Peltz Co past the Melons 6 to 1. With the win, Alliance moves on to a Sunday contest versus Minden. Hamel pitched all 7 frames, giving up just 2 third inning hits in helping the Navy group improve to 23-24-2 for the year. The game was played in Holdrege. A three run fifth inning broke open a tight contest. The Peltz Co finished the game with 5 hits and were led by Israel Garcia and Tanner Salcido who had 2 knocks each.

Gothenburg was the visitors and failed to score in the top of the first. In the home half, Alliance scored once. Garcia drew a walk and advanced after a hit by Teagan O’Gorman and a walk by Salcido. The Spartans’ first tally then ensued as Casyn Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. Both teams went scoreless in the second and the ball game went to the third with the Peltz Co leading 1 to 0.

Inning 3 had the Melons tying the battle using a single and a double. Alliance’s bats were again silent in the bottom of the frame. In the fourth, Post 64 went down without a tally as Hamel recorded a strikeout. The Peltz Co went down 1-2-3 in their attempt in the home half of the 4th.

Alliance then surge ahead in the fifth. The Navy group held Gothenburg without a tally in the top of the inning while scoring three times to take a 4 to 1 advantage. A single by Garcia started the spree and then the Spartan lead off man then stole both second and third to get into scoring position. A sac bunt by O’Gorman followed, making the score 2 to 1. The rally continued with a single by Salcido and he moved to second after a bunt by Miguel Galvan. Alliance’s third score came after an RBI ground out by Rodriguez. After five innings of action, the Peltz Co had a 4 to 1 margin.

Another scoreless inning by Hamel is how the sixth began as the Spartans held the 3 run lead. The Navy club put the contest away with 2 more tallies in the bottom of inning 6. RBI knocks by Garcia and Salcido plus an RBI ground out by O’Gorman made it a 6 to 1 ball game. Two more k’s by Hamel in Gothenburg’s last inning finished off the Alliance 6 to 1 victory.
