September 13, 1895

A covered wagon piled full of grocery supplies and drawn by a team of long-eared quadrupeds going northward attracted our attention Monday morning. Investigation revealed that Clarence Dahlburg, M. C. Hubble, George and Frank Darling were concealed therein. They said they were bound for Hot Springs on a two weeks’ camping excursion.

September 14, 1900

Mrs. Crittenden has received an interesting letter from “Jack.” Twenty-five days is the time required for the transportation of a letter from Copper River, Alaska, where he is now located, to Alliance. The trip was made only after hardships and slow progress, the party being required to cut their way through dense green forests in the making of a trail, and in other places were beset from dangers by forest fires.

Mrs. Rustin, county superintendent, informs us that third place was awarded this county at the state fair for the exhibit made in educational work. It was the first time Box Butte county had made a try, and next time, with more preparation, it is thought that first might be secured.

Patrons of the City library, after a summer’s recess, will notice marked improvements in the furnishings and decorations of the interior on the occasion of their first visit. During the summer recess a new linoleum has been placed on the floor, the walls have been tinted in tan and brown and the woodwork has been re-varnished.

Soldiers, charged with being under the influence of liquor, collided with three cars while driving down the principal business street a few nights ago. They were fined $10. Nobody would deny a soldier the right to have a little fun, even to the right of taking on a few scuttles of beer, if he be so inclined, but driving a car while under the influence of liquor is a dangerous thing and it should not be passed so lightly.

Meanie Steals Keys From Local Truckers: Truckers working on the highway oiling job east of the city were peeved Wednesday night when they left an informal party at an East Third street home and found that the ignition keys they had left in three trucks had been stolen and they were unable to move them.

Nomination for the meanest couple of the week: According to the police blotter, two minions of the law were making their rounds late Wednesday night when they found an infant and two other small children left in a car parked on Fifth street. The officers started a search for the parents, found them enjoying a movie. They ordered them out and to take better care of their children.

The USO is taking over housing of servicemen and their families from the Red Cross effective Sunday, Sept. 16, Mrs. Jack Kane, Red Cross home service division chairman announced this morning. All listings should be made at the USO, phone 422, and servicemen desiring rooms should be referred there.

Sandhillo race track officials announced today that the feature seventh race Saturday will be called the Hans Jaggers Memorial. Jaggers, who died August 21, was vice-president of the Alliance Agricultural and Breeding Assn.

News has been received here that H. C. Murphy, president of the Burlington Railroad and former Alliance resident, will retire October 1. Murphy served as superintendent of the Alliance Division in 1931-32.

The Alliance Emergency Unit took Clyde Weston and his son, Charles (Chuck) Weston, to St. Joseph’s Hospital after a wall collapsed on them. According to spectators at the scene, the Westons were demolishing a condemned building, the former Western Hotel when they were struck by the falling wall.

Many loads of choice cattle were sold at the special sale at the Alliance Livestock Co., Friday in slightly under three hours. A total of 2,010 cattle were sold and most moved into Illinois and Iowa with the balance going to Colorado, Wyoming, eastern Nebraska and the North Platte Valley.

A bid for four used 1979 and 1980 model police cars to be purchased from Kizzier Chevrolet of Scottsbluff was approved by the City Council Thursday evening. The bid of $18,791.89 was the only one received in response to advertising for used police cars.

The Alliance City Council attempted to tackle the subject of whether to repair the eroding shoreline at Laing Lake or to just drain the lake and possibly plant grass. The discussion came about after City Manager Wolfgang Bauer informed the council the lake’s waves are eroding the shoreline and the lake is losing an average of 60-70 gallons of water per minute.

Box Butte General Hospital has joined with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to offer a 55 Alive/Mature Driving, state-approved driver improvement course. AARP developed the eight-hour classroom refresher course to help drivers 50 years old or older to improve their skills and prevent traffic accidents.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission euthanized a mountain lion on a ranch near Hemingford on Tuesday. A joint decision by Game and Parks and the landowner to shoot the cat was made after it was perceived to be a threat to humans.

Residents have seen trees coming down in multiple locations throughout town. Some of these trees that have to be removed are ash trees. Ash trees throughout the Lincoln and Omaha area are being cut and destroyed because of a destructive insect known as the emerald ash borer.

A Hemingford man is facing time in prison after bring charged with three counts of possession of child pornography, each a class 2A felony, which carries a maximum of up to 20 years in prison for each charge if he is found guilty.
