St. Agnes hosted Hay Springs on Thursday for a pair of volleyball matches. In a 3 set contest, it was the visiting Hawks defeating the Academy 25 23 18 25 15 10. Hay Springs also won the JV affair, besting the Crusaders in 2 sets by the scores of 25 17 25 19. With the loss, the Academy varsity club falls to 2 and 3 for the year.
Action was very tight in the opening set. Kills and points by Lady Crusaders Quinn Robertson, Delaney Jelinek and Aubrey Dudden key an early spree for Alliance. Three straight Robertson tallies tied the set at 15. The guests countered with 4 in a row to go up 19 to 15. Eighth grader Alexis Shelmadine then went to the line and scored 6 in a row to give the Academy a 2 point lead. The set was then tied at 21 and 23 before 2 consecutive Hawk points gave the visitors set #1 25 to 23.
A late surge in the second by the Crusaders knotted the contest at 2 games all. Nice plays early in the set by Kale Hulquist and Robertson had the board read 10 to 10. An ace serve by Robertson put SA up 1 at 11 to 10. Later in the action, three straight scores by Dudden push the Alliance lead to 16 to 13. Gradually, the Academy pull away with points coming from Addison Intermill and Shelmadine. The set came to an end with 3 in a row by Shelmadine and the Crusaders getting the win at 25 to 18.
Set #3 was a close one with the game tied at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7. A kill by Shelmadine knotted the game at 7. Alliance would close to 11 to 10 after a Jelinek kill and a point by Robertson but it was Hay Springs going on a 4 to 0 spree to finish the game. Final of set 3 Hay Springs 15 to 10
