2026 is only 21 days old and already the sports world is riveting!
Could you find a parking spot at Alliance High School last Saturday? There were a few, but it required walking more than a few steps. Alliance hosted the annual Koozer-Dobson Slam wrestling tournament. Boys and girls from preschool to eighth grade competed. If you missed the event, check our Chelsie Herian’s facebook page “Sideline Snaps By Chels.” 274 photos have been posted. That’s a dedicated wrestling mama-fan.
The Gering at Alliance High School girls and boy’s wrestling dual was held on Thursday, January 15 in the Performing Arts Center Auditorium. Positive feedback included watching the competition in a cushioned seat instead of a hard bleacher. Negative feedback was the fact that food and drink were not allowed inside the auditorium. Not allowing sticky sugar drinks and ketchup with mustard covered hot dogs — that could easily damage and stain those comfortable seats — has been a long-standing rule since the PAC opened in 2011.
The Cornhusker men’s basketball team remains unbeaten at 18-0 following Saturday’s 19-point victory at Northwestern.
It was a crisp and clear Saturday afternoon, so I cruised around Box Butte County while listening to Mr. Bang-A-Rang on the radio. I was also observing damage caused by Friday’s 69-mph wind gusts.
Damage was to be found. The wooden cross that Cynthia and I erected at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery near Hemingford was blown to the ground. It also happened last year. The cemetery has no protection from the north wind. 800,000 corn shucks from an adjacent field were also blown into the cemetery. The cemetery will be spruced up by May 1. That is a promise.
I cannot promise local Denver Broncos fans that the Orange and Blue will win Sunday’s AFC Championship game vs. New England. Not without quarterback Bo Nix, who sustained a broken ankle during the 33-30 victory over Buffalo.
However, sports drama includes the unexpected prevailing. So, do not give up hope.
I must admit, my heart is with the Los Angeles Rams.
Why?
Their quarterback, Matthew Stafford, has four adorable daughters.
Eight-year-old twins Sawyer and Chandler, seven-year-old Hunter and five-year-old Tyler. The girls have often been photographed giving their daddy hugs and good luck kisses minutes before kickoff. A true family affair.
If it is the Rams and Broncos in Super Bowl LX, I’ll be rooting for the quarterback with the darling daughters.
Especially since Bo has been nixed.
