Supporting rural healthcare, agriculture, and local communities remains a top priority as we continue our work this legislative session.
On February 9, I presented LB 1229 to fellow members of the Appropriations Committee. This bill would create the Rural Health Transformation Fund to receive and manage federal funds from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) through the Rural Health Transformation Program. Establishing this fund will help ensure Nebraska is well positioned to leverage federal resources to strengthen rural health systems, improve access to care, and support the long-term sustainability of providers serving our rural communities.
The Appropriations Committee also heard LB 1231, another legislative measure that I introduced, on February 12. This bill authorizes the transfer of unused funds from the Panhandle Improvement Project Cash Fund to the Animal Damage Control Cash Fund. By redirecting existing dollars where they are most needed, this measure promotes responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources while continuing to support important efforts related to animal damage control and agricultural protection in our region.
In addition to committee hearings, I participated in my monthly call with education leaders and board members from District 47 to discuss legislative proposals and current issues affecting education in Nebraska. These conversations provide valuable insight into how proposed policies may impact our schools, teachers, and students, and help ensure I am effectively representing the needs of our local communities.
The Nebraska Association of County Extension Boards (NACEB) also held its Legislative Day at the Capitol. I had the opportunity to visit with Kevin Wilkins, City Manager of Ogallala, along with others from our district. I appreciate the work of NACEB and the vital role Extension plays in strengthening agriculture, supporting youth development, and enhancing communities across our state.
Lastly, the 2026 Nebraska Tourism Awards Ceremony took place this week. I am proud to share that the Carhenge Mural Festival in Alliance received the first-place award. During the Carhenge Arts Festival, organized by the Alliance Creative District, internationally recognized muralists left their mark at Carhenge. This recognition highlights the creativity and community spirit that make our district such a special place.
As always, I appreciate your continued engagement on these important topics. If you have any feedback or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your input is invaluable in shaping the future of our district and state. You can contact my office at (402) 471-2616 or by email at pstrommen@leg.ne.gov.
