March 27, 1896
The seventeen-year-old son of W. H. Wheelan, living about six miles north of Hemingford, was kicked in the face by a horse while out in the field Tuesday, and it was sometime before he was found. He was pretty badly injured, but will probably recover. He was unconscious and under the feet of the horses when discovered.

The electric light and power company contemplates putting in eating machinery and laying steam pipes throughout the business portions of the city, thus economizing the waste steam for heating purposes. Electric fans will also be put in this spring.

The members of the Credit Clearinghouse met last night in the office of E. Burton, manager, to look over the list of debtors filed and to discuss methods for the future. They found about 400 names of persons filed who had been slow about meeting their obligations, or had refused to pay without giving any good reason for their refusal and who now owe more than $40,000.

One of the light wires leading to the power plant at the septic tank of the Alliance sewer system was blown loose by the wind early in the week, striking a number of the telephone lines and putting several phones out of business.

Three students selected from the high school left for Lincoln to attend the state judging contest, to be held there under the direction of the agricultural department. Although the Alliance schools have enrolled in this work for the past three years, this is the first time the members of the school have attended the annual contest.

Alleging, among other things, that his wife fled the family hearth and went from Alliance to Denver and later to El Paso, Tex., where she associated with persons of rude reputation, visited gambling dives and danced before men dressed only in tights, Reinhold Kittlemann, farmer living about 14 miles northeast of town, has filed a petition in district court asking for a divorce from Anna M. Kittlemann.

The membership quota of the Alliance Post of the American Legion was among the first in the state to be reported filled. The required 172 members were secured and reported the fore part of the week of the state campaign.

Any boy under 12 years of age can share in the award of $17.50 to be made this week by The Times-Herald for the best bird house submitted in the contest which closes Saturday, April 4. First prize will be $10 in cash, second prize $5, and third prize $2.50.

The sale or and liquor to minors in Alliance will b under a decided handicap from now on, as a result of an action by the city council at its meeting last night. The council authorized the printing and distribution to beer and liquor dealers in Alliance of printed slips which must be properly filled out and signed by any customer who is asked to do so by the dealer.

Election of Alliance’s 52 school teachers was the main order of business in a lengthy school board meeting held at the high school Wednesday night. Miss Meta Norenberg, senior English teacher, was appointed to be the high school’s first dean of girls. She has been doing work of a nature befitting such an office during the past year.

This week the streets of Alliance got some white paint to outline parking spaces and pedestrian lanes at intersections. The result is pleasant to the eye. The broad white marks on the red bricks form a neat contrast that is befitting to our good streets.

While an Alliance insurance man (name by request) was selling a fellow a policy on his household goods just being moved in, someone flipped a cigarette into the davenport and did $100 damage.

An Alliance man has confessed to breaking into Hempel’s Service Station and to stealing a pickup truck Tuesday night, police reported this morning. Abel M admitted breaking a glass in the front door of the station with his fist, entering and taking several packs of cigarettes, three flashlights and a key to a cash register.

Vandals warmed up their pitching arms over the weekend and used the windows at Central School as their targets. Police reported today that no less than nine windows were broken by rocks and pieces of concrete that found their marks. Included was a big plate glass window by the north door.

The United Parcels Co., a nationwide delivery service, has signed a contract to erect a 40×60-foot metal building in the Burlington Addition of Alliance. A representative of the company was here today to sign the contract with Contractor Walter Mischnick.

The Box Butte County Sheriff’s Department is at full strength with the addition of Bill Eickhoff who started his deputy duties Saturday. He came here from Lincoln after working with a special investigative unit and prior to that was a patrolman with the Norfolk Police Department. Eickhoff said “this is one of the most progressive departments in the state for its size.”

Farmers seem to always be looking for ways to get ahead and produce a better crop variety. Arnold Jensen of Hemingford and the Nebraska Potato Shippers have begun a process of producing potatoes through a “cloning” process in hopes of a stronger variety.

Liverpool, England’s Bernie Neill met Alliance’s John Perrin 16-years-ago through their businesses. Neill owns a company called B.C. Neill Air Conditioning Ltd. He and his staff of nine install and service air conditioning units for large equipment used in the mining and construction business all over the United Kingdom. Perrin’s Alliance based company Perrin Manufacturing, Inc. manufactures air conditioning and heating equipment.

The number of visitors to Carhenge during 2000 was only 31 percent of what the trend had been for the preceding six years. Paul Phaneuf, president of Friends of Carhenge, attributes most of the decline to the relocation of U.S. Highway-385 traffic away from Carhenge, to the west side of the city.

Yesterday in Box Butte County Court, Jane S., 47, Hemingford, entered a plea of guilty to a charge of theft by unlawful taking of over $1,500, a Class I Felony. Originally charged with three additional counts, she entered her plea as part of a plea bargain.

With the upcoming anniversary of the week the first shots were fired at Fort Summer approaching, the week of April 19, the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center will be officially introducing its “Adopt A Civil War Hero Program.” The event is part of the 150th anniversary celebration commemorating the Civil War and its history.

On Friday morning, former Box Butte County Public Defender Jon Worthman was sentenced in a case where he was found guilty of possession of cocaine with intent to deliver. Prior to sentencing, Judge Richard Birch conducted a hearing on Jon W.’s motion for a new trial.
