It is such an honor for me as one of my first official acts having returned to Alliance to invite everyone to join me recognizing our Alliance Heroes!
They do not always wear capes or seek recognition. Instead, they quietly serve with steadfast commitment and a selfless sense of duty, improving lives and strengthening our community in ways both visible and unseen. I wish everyone had the opportunity I do to witness firsthand the remarkable contributions public servants make each day to the City of Alliance and Box Butte County.
You may recognize some of these individuals by their uniforms: firefighters, police officers, linemen, and water professionals who work tirelessly to ensure our safety and essential services. Yet many others serve just as faithfully behind the scenes: in offices and museums, in remote locations, and in roles few residents ever see. They safeguard public resources through fiscal responsibility and accountability. They support our community by coordinating volunteers, managing transportation and cemetery services, and ensuring that vital systems operate smoothly.
You will also find public servants on the sidelines of ball games, teaching classes, attending school activities, and offering help to those in need. Wherever they work and whatever their role, they share a common purpose: a desire to serve others and improve the safety, well‑being, and quality of life in our city.
A government of, by, and for the people is sustained only through the hard work and extraordinary sacrifice of citizens willing to serve the communities they love. In every city and every town across America, this proud tradition of service continues quietly building and sustaining our nation, one community at a time. Public service is more than a job; it is a calling. It reflects our shared values and our commitment to serve a cause greater than ourselves. President Theodore Roosevelt once reminded us, “The government is us—we are the government, you and I.” While government is often thought of only in terms of elected officials or agencies, it is truly made up of the neighbors, friends, and family members who dedicate their careers to serving the public good.
Public Service Recognition Week is an opportunity to pause and say thank you. It is a time to honor the women and men at all levels of government who meet daily challenges with professionalism, resolve, and innovation, whether responding to emergencies, maintaining infrastructure, supporting community programs, or ensuring responsible stewardship of public resources.
As a community, we have many reasons to be proud of those who serve. During Public Service Recognition Week, and throughout the year, I invite you to join me in recognizing these local heroes and expressing our sincere gratitude.
To our public servants: thank you for the energy, dedication, and heart you bring to serving Alliance. Our community is stronger because of you.
