Penny J. Johannes, 71, of Hemingford, Nebraska passed away October 15, 2026 peacefully at her home in Hemingford.
Penny was born in Alliance, Nebraska on May 17, 1955 to Thomas “Bert” and Barbara “Barb” (Lewis) Shrewsbury. She spent her youth around the Alliance area and graduated in 1973. The next year, she would welcome her son, Daniel, into the world. She raised Daniel, and 15 years later would welcome her second son, Dustin.
For nearly 40 years, she shared her life with her husband David. Together they built a home, raised a family, weathered the years, and cared for one another through all that life brought them. Later in life, Penny found herself raising a family once again, helping to raise her granddaughter Ana from childhood and becoming an enduring presence in her life.
Penny was a strong-willed, generous woman whose family meant everything to her. She lived her life putting the needs of her loved ones above her own, always making sure that family came first. She had a strength of character that defined who she was and a generous heart that showed in the way she cared for those closest to her.
One of the greatest reflections of Penny’s character was her unwavering devotion to her husband, David Johannes. She was a deeply loving wife who stood faithfully by his side and never left him. Their bond was a testament to a love built on loyalty, commitment, and devotion. David preceded Penny in death on October 4, 2026, just eleven days before her own passing. Their loss so close together is a heartbreaking chapter in their family’s story.
Penny is survived by her sons, Daniel (Beth) Winter and Dustin (Sabrina) Johannes; her stepdaughter, Nikki Soto (Brian Jelinek); grandchildren, Ana Rodriguez (Michael Bravo), Adriana Soto, Anjelina Soto, Kyra Johannes, Darren Johannes, and Bryson Winter; her great-grandchildren, Michael & Cameron Bravo; her brothers, Tom and Kris Shrewsbury; her sister Pepper Shrewsbury; along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be combined with her husband David on Tuesday, October 20 from 2-4 p.m. at the Alliance Eagles Club.
