On Saturday, October 10, 2020, Sargent First Class, Edward Chipperfield and his son Gunners Mate Technician, Dwight Chipperfield, were presented with Quilts of Valor in the front yard of Edward’s home.
Edward’s quilt was pieced by Janet Clark, bound by Susan Walker and quilted by Kathy Dye and Vic Bolek. Dwight’s quilt was pieced by Sue Williams, bound by Lou Marshall, and bound by Carol Bauer.
Edward Chipperfield enlisted in the United States National Guard on September 29, 1947 in Lincoln, NE. After a few years in the National Guard in Lincoln, he was sent to Alliance to recruit and work at the BG Armory for the Company L 134th Infantry. He met his wife, Eldora at a Saturday night dance and they then married in 1952, and they went on to have five children. During his service he held the ranks of Squad Leader and Supply Sargent and he ended his career as Sargent First Class. He was a certified thirty caliber marksman, and furthered his military education with ANCO, unit supply, unit maintenance, and track and wheel courses. His track and wheel course was in Aberdeen, MD and his train fare was paid for by the National Guard, and on this trip he toured the White House and saw the Statue of Liberty. While serving Edward received the Army Reserve Achievement Component Medal in 1973, 1981, and 1985, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal in 1981, and the Nebraska National Guard Individual Achievement Medal Ribbon 1987. Sargent First Class Edward Chipperfield was honorably discharged from the United States National Guard on October 3, 1989.
Gunners Mate Technician Second Class Dwight Chipperfield enlisted in the United States Navy on January 30, 1980. He attended boot camp at Recruit training command in San Diego, CA. After boot camp he was awarded meritorious advancement to E2. On Mar 28, 1980, he went to Gunners Mate Technician school A. He then reported to the USS Enterprise on July 12, 1980. He was separated from service on January 27, 1984 and was honorably discharged in January, 1986. He was awarded the sea service ribbon, the Humanitarian service medal, and the Navy Achievement medal.
