History reports that horses have been involved in physical therapy techniques since the ancient Greeks. Evidence suggests the movement of the horse translates to the rider who, being upon the horse’s back, increases core strength, flexibility, balance and confidence with their own physical abilities simply by the act of riding. As horse therapy gains in popularity, so have the efforts in attempting to use horses to help people with the challenges associated with cerebral palsy, stroke or multiple sclerosis.
In recent history, utilizing the horse as a tool for improving the mental health of individuals suffering with trauma issues has been gaining traction. The relationship developed between horses and riders, while needing more empirical investigations, cannot be denied as an avenue to help in recovery and therapy in conditions brought on by post traumatic stress disorder, autism, or other situations wherein mental well-being is in question.
At its foundation, East Point Horspice understands the ability of horses to create an environment where the horses go well beyond being fuzzy critters to playing critical roles in nurturing meaningful, productive interactions. While activities exist year around, EPH welcomes volunteers for the riding program beginning in May. Stay tuned for details.
