An accident claimed the life of a teenager on Oct. 7.
Deputy J.D. Sutphen with the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office said they received the report of a single-vehicle accident north of Madison Road on CR 61 at approximately 10:30 p.m.
Sutphen explained that one teenager was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Another occupant of the vehicle, Sutphen noted, sought treatment for injuries after the accident. Sutphen explained that seatbelts were not in use in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
An investigation into the accident is still under way, Sutphen explained, and the cause of the accident is unknown, though Sutphen suspects dry road conditions played a role in the crash. He encouraged people to monitor the road conditions.
“With the conditions of the roads, because it has been such a dry year, slow down and take your time,” said Sutphen. “It’s better to be late than not make it at all. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to grandma’s house or if you’re late getting home for a curfew, whatever the case may be, walking in the door five minutes late is probably better than not making it at all.”
