Producers growing corn, potatoes or sugar beets in 2025 can receive up to $15 per acre for reducing nitrogen applications.
The Nitrogen Reduction Incentive Program was created by the Nebraska Legislature during the 2024 Session to encourage producers to use less nitrogen with the goal of protecting and improving groundwater quality. Incentive payments range from $10 to $15 per acre and are based on established priority areas. Within the Upper Niobrara White NRD, defined municipal well head protection areas will be the highest priorities and will be eligible for the $15 per acre payment with irrigated fields and dryland fields being eligible for the $12 and $10 per acre, respectfully. Payments will be based on a reduction of 40 lbs. per acre or 15% of historic nitrogen application.
To qualify, a producer must complete the application form and provide historic fertilizer use information and a current soil test, by January 15, 2025. More information can be found at www.unwnrd.org or by calling 308-432-6190.
