Even Mother Nature could not stop the Alliance St. Agnes track teams from completing a rare 5 sports Panhandle Conference sweep!
On Thursday, April 25 the Crusaders headed to Morrill for the Panhandle Conference track meet. Eight teams took part in the competition.
After winning girl’s volleyball in the fall and both boys and girl’s basketball winning in the winter St. Agnes was hoping to complete the rare sweep of all five conference crowns. Hopes appeared to have been dashed when the meet was called off due to bad weather with 5 events left- 200 mile 200 hurdles and both relays.
The girls team race showed St. Agnes in first but the boys were in second .5 points behind Hemingford. After much discussion it was up to the coaches to send in times for the 5 events that were left. And when the smoke cleared the St. Agnes girl’s team was crown champions with 122 points with Hemingford second with 104 points. In the boy’s race SA came out on top with 157 points followed by Hemingford with 122 points which completed the conference sweep! St. Agnes had four gold medalists with Coy Childers winning the 100 hurdles for the boys and Reese Armstrong first in the girls pole vault, Kimber Freiberger winning first in the 800, and Maslin Breen winning the girls high jump. It was the second year in a row the girls have been conference track champs.
