Box Butte General Hospital (BBGH) hosted the Nebraska Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative (NPQIC) on Wednesday, June 19th to educate employees and surrounding professionals about maternal and neonatal complications.
Presenters Sydnie Carraher, DNP, APRN-NP, NNP, Brendan Connealy, MD, MBA, FACOG, Marisa Schaffer, MSN, RNC-MNN, and Amy Termaat APRN-NP, NNP, discussed maternal hypertension, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, neonatal resuscitation and stabilization. Individuals who attended also got hands-on training with NPQIC’s simulation equipment.
“The simulation training was helpful to run through life threatening scenarios in a relaxed environment with resources that are not available in rural areas,” BBGH Family Medicine/Obstetrics Doctor Derek Shafer said.
BBGH Obstetric Coordinator Samantha Andreasen, RN, CLC, added, “Being selected to host the NPQIC Neonatal Simulation was an honor. We had a great turnout with 19 participants from the Panhandle critical access hospitals. Being able to come together and obtain and share knowledge to better care for our obstetric community was a great opportunity for our hospital and staff to continue to provide the best care in the Panhandle.”
NPQIC leads statewide efforts to “implement evidence-based practices and quality improvement initiatives to reduce maternal and infant mortality as well as eliminate inequities in perinatal healthcare.” There are educational events and resources available on their website at www.npqic.org.
