Betty J. Yekel passed away on January 4, 2021 at the Good Samaritan Retirement Center in Fort Collins, Colorado at the age of 91. She was born on October 24, 1929 in Alliance, Nebraska to Zelma (Post) and Kenneth Broich. Raised by her single mother, Betty gained a wonderful stepfather, Carl Fredrick, and a stepbrother, Richard, when she was in her teens.
She graduated from Alliance High School in 1948 and spent her entire life living in Alliance except for the past few years.
Betty married Clarence (Whitey) Yekel in 1949. He died in 1989. She was a charter member of St. John’s Lutheran church and a member of the Eagle’s Auxiliary.
Over the years, she worked as a teller at the Guardian State Bank and a bookkeeper at St Joseph’s hospital and Hall Cattle Company. She loved to travel, always wore a ready smile and had the patience of a saint.
Betty is survived by her three children, Penny Yekel of Scottsbluff, Paula (Richard) Connell of Fort Collins, CO, Steve (Karen) Yekel of Sierra Vista, AZ, and three grandchildren, Gregory and Kristin Connell and Lindsay Swanson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, stepfather, and stepbrother.
Memorials may be given to St John’s Lutheran church.
Cremation has taken place and a service will be scheduled later in the year.
