A 20 point, 8 rebound performance by Alliance’s Macey Seebohm propelled the Alliance girls basketball team past Gordon/Rushville 43 to 36 in action played Tuesday night in Gordon. The Bulldogs netted 25 free throws on the evening in recording their first win for the year. With the victory, AHS now sees its record now stands at one and thirteen. Seebohm nailed 12 shots from the charity stripe including 4 in the fourth period as the Lady Bulldogs withstood a late rally by the Mustangs. Sophomore Paz Cody came off the Alliance bench and added 7 points to help secure the win.
Both teams put together nice scoring sprees in the opening quarter. Seebohm started her big night with a three pointer and 2 free throws that helped the Dogs take an early 5 to 0. Gordon responded with the contest’s next 8 points to surge ahead by 3 at the four minute stage. Three more Alliance free throws then tied the game at 8 with Seebohm swishing 2 and Bulldog Brooke Bailey tallying one. Down the stretch in the first, it was Gordon making a move. The Mustangs hit back to back goals to move ahead by 4. Bailey ended the first period scoring with 2 free throws and the quarter closed with Gordon up 12 to 10.
Alliance’s defense was especially tough in the second. The Dogs limited the hosts to just 5 points. Meanwhile, the AHS offense put up 10 more points in the period. Seebohm started the scoring with a 2 pointer at the 5 minute mark. A trey by Cody then gave the guests a 15 to 12 advantage. Another good shot from the free throw line by Seebohm put the Gordon deficit at 4 at 16 to 12. The Mustangs answered right back with a three and a 2 which put the hosts ahead by 1 at the three minute stage. Alliance then would close out the scoring in the half with 4 points, all from the charity stripe. Miah Marsteller tied the contest at 17 with one good free throw and Seebohm gave the visitors a 3 point halftime lead with 3 more from the stripe. At half, AHS was ahead 20 to 17.
In the opening moments of the period #3, the Dogs expanded their margin. Two free throws by Marsteller opened the scoring. They were followed by a three by Alliance’s Addison Weber. The Bulldog junior then scored on a 2 point goal that put the AHS lead at 10, 27 to 17. After a Mustang bucket, Cody kept the Dogs in the lead by 10 with a 2 pointer. Gordon countered with a brief spree. The hosts netted 6 consecutive points that sliced the Dog lead to 4 with under a minute left in the period. Seebohm concluded the quarter’s scoring with a three pointer and the teams headed to the fourth with Alliance leading 32 to 25.
In the final quarter, Alliance would fail to make a basket but nailed 11 free throws in getting the win. Seebohm hit one free throw to start the action in the final 8 minutes. Momentum then swung to the hosts as Gordon ran off 6 straight to get close at 33 to 31 with under 4 minutes left to play. The Mustangs then fouled Cody, who coolly swished 2 free throws to make the score 35 to 31 in favor of the guests. Bailey then went to the line and made one as AHS surged ahead by 5. Three straight tallies by Gordon ensued that made things interesting at 36 to 34. A good free throw by Seebohm was next but the hosts answered back with a 2 pointer. At the three minute stage, the Dogs’ lead was at 1. Alliance though was money from the line down the stretch. Two free throws each by Seebohm, Bailey, and Marsteller pushed the AHS advantage to 7 with under a minute left to play. A final 3 attempt by Gordon was no good and the Dogs ran out the final seconds.
