Big Second Half Carries Cards Past AHS

Friday night action had the Alliance girl’s basketball team playing hosts to the Cards from Chadron. Using a big second half, it was the guest claiming a 52 to 36 win over the Bulldogs. Chadron outscored AHS 26 to 13 in periods three and fourth in getting the victory. With the loss, the Dogs drop to 3 and 11 for the season. The visitors also got the W in the JV contest, defeating AHS 30 to 18. Leading the scoring for the Bulldogs in the varsity game was Paz Cody who canned 4 three pointers on her way to a 12 point performance. Junior Brooke Bailey added 8 for the Dogs. Chadron’s lead was only three at half but pulled away in the final 16 minutes in getting their second victory over Alliance this season.

Points were plentiful in the first with Alliance scoring 16 and the Cardinals tallying 14. Two free throws by Addison Weber along with a bucket by Bailey gave the Bulldogs a 4 to 2 lead in the early stages. After 5 in a row by the guests, a trey by Cody the game at 7 at the 5 minutes mark. The clubs then swapped scores with AHS getting 2 free throws by Brinlee Lanik. Alliance then went on a nice spree thanks to tallies by Cody, Olivia Krejic and Reese Armstrong to take a 6 point lead at 16 to 10.

The quarter closed with 2 hoops by the Cards and Alliance out in front by 2.

Period #2 saw the Cardinals start taking control. Six consecutive points by CHS put the Dog deficit at 4. Two Bailey free throws and a deuce by the Dog ensued as the hosts stayed close. At the midway point, a bucket by Krejci knotted the battle at 22. The quarter came to a conclusion with 2 hoops by the Lady Cardinals and another free throw by Bailey. After 2 period of play, Chadron was up 26 to 23.

Alliance would manage just 7 tallies in the third while Chadron put 13 in the scoring column. Chadron came out and scored the game’s next 8 points to surge ahead by 11. A 3 pointer by Cody ended the run but a trey by the guests kept Chadron in front. The visitors then scored 2 as the Dogs trailed 39 to 26 with under 2 minutes left in the period.

An Armstrong free throw and Cody three at the buzzer finished the period with AHS down by 9 at 39 to 30.

Any thought on an Alliance comeback were quickly erased in the opening moments of the fourth. Chadron extended its advantage by scoring 6 in a row that put the visitors up by 15. After a free throw by Bailey, back to back baskets by the Cards increased their margin to 18 at 49 to 31.

The clubs then traded scores with Alliance getting a hoop by Weber and the Cardinals hitting a three. Action finished with a trey by Krejci and the Cards getting the win 52 to 36.
