A drunken fellow in one of the saloons the other night snapped the hammer of a revolver on what fortunately was the only unloaded chamber. It was pointed towards the crowd, and the celerity with which he was kicked out is said to be remarkable.

The little son of County Judge Bruce Wilcox burned his hand quite severely by falling against a stove last Sunday while Mr. and Mrs. W. were visiting friends in the country.

Miss Laura Morris, the nine-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Morris, was operated on Monday morning at their home for appendicitis. The operation was successful and the young lady is getting along nicely at this writing.

The campaign to clean up venereal diseases in Alliance, in conformity with the state-wide plan, was launched by the board of health this morning when ten individual cases were summoned to appear for treatment as prescribed by law.

February 3, 1925

Miss Marie Casey, 35, an actress in Larimer street theatre in Denver, was arrested Saturday by Denver detectives in connection with the Alliance fur robbery. Miss Casey, who is being held for investigation, is said to have worn a fur coat corresponding to one taken from the Fashion Shop.

February 4, 1930

Two women attempted to conceal a couple of large jugs of whiskey beneath their skirts in the rear seat of an auto on the street late Saturday but were unsuccessful. Their husbands, Peter Hirsch, 32, farmer, and George Knapp, 34, laborer, were then arrested by police on liquor charges.

February 1, 1935

Alliance city water has again been judged “bacteriologically satisfactory for human use,” an announcement received by Dr. Lee Farmer from state offices says. The report on water conditions is made quarterly. Some communities, particularly during the drouth period, had their drinking water condemned.

January 30, 1940

Moderate weather came to western Nebraska this week, but housewives were feeling the effects of the prolonged zero cold wave. The price of eggs as reported by the Alliance Creamery Monday showed a big jump. Extras went from 13 to 22 cents, selects went from 11 to 20 cents and No. 2’s went from 9 to 16 cents.

A two-man crime wave was nipped in the bud this week by Dan Hoppes, Box Butte county sheriff, when Finous Hall, 28, was arrested and bound over to district court on a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and LeRoy Lang, 21, was arrested and bound over to district court on a forgery charge.

January 31, 1950

The Alliance police have a problem: What to do with a stray nanny goat. Officers picked up the goat Sunday when she was making a nuisance of herself in South Alliance. The stray is still “committed” at the police station but Chief Doug Thomas said he will gladly give her to the person who owns her. Thomas has appointed Officer Joe St. Onge as official “goat-milker” for the Alliance police department. This morning, the pint of milk was fed to Assistant Chief L. E. Pilkington’s dog.

National Boys Scout Week begins Sunday, but Alliance Scouts and their work will be in evidence starting Saturday. Troops and Cub Packs have prepared displays which will go into store windows Saturday. The displays will show items the boys have made or use in Scout work.

Postoffice Here Gets $215,000 Remodeling: An enlargement and modernization project at the Alliance Postoffice has been given the “go-ahead” signal by the General Service Administration in Washington.

Four men being held in Box Butte County Jail on separate criminal charges were brought before District Judge A. W. Crites this morning to enter pleas. One was sentenced. Vincent J. Patton was sentenced to 30 months in the Nebraska Penal Complex for probation from an Alliance breaking and entering incident in May, 1964.

A new Home Health Agency with Mrs. Allan Schrimpf, R.N. as director, and in cooperation with St. Joseph’s Hospital and Alliance doctors, has been started in Alliance. Its purpose is to provide nursing service within private homes on a fee basis.

First Footings Poured For Box Butte General Hospital: Footings in the basement area were poured Monday when temperatures reached the desired level and Schilder reported that progress to date indicates the new hospital should be ready for patients by June of 1976.

Alliance Cub Scouts recently put their creations to the test at a pinewood derby in the basement of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. The derby is an annual father-son event featuring cares of various shapes and colors, handcrafted from pre-packaged kits.

An Alliance Police Department internal affairs investigation report says “allegations” into a complaint by an inmate at the Regional Law Enforcement Center that he was mistreated by two Alliance Police Department officers “are not sustained.”

Burlington Northern Railroad employees were busy cleaning up diesel fuel after an estimated 65,000 to 66,000 gallons of fuel spilled at the Burlington Northern Railroad facility on the southern edge of Alliance early Thursday morning.

The local Lions Club is raising funds for two projects at the present time. The club will help the Alliance Police Department obtain a police dog and contribute to the I PLAY (Invest in Play and Leisure for Alliance Youth) playground equipment.

RSVP Always Seeking Volunteers: “Our program stands for Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP),” Bayonne Meyer, director of RSVP, told the Alliance Kiwanis Club at their noontime meeting Tuesday at the Opera House. “In the panhandle of Nebraska, we like to think of it as Respond and Serve Program.” The Alliance RSVP was formed 27 years ago under the National Senior Service Corp. To belong you must be at least 55 years old.

In 2004 the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department responded to 626 calls, Assistant Chief/Public Information Office (PIO) Garry Bauer said. The majority of those calls, 451, were city emergency medical service (EMS) calls. The department also responded to 46 rural EMS calls, 84 city fires, 37 rural fires and eight “other calls.”

Shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday, a twelve-person jury returned a verdict of guilty in a case against Ronald Nagaki, 60, Alliance. Nagaki was charged with third-offense driving under the influence over .15, a Class IIIA felony.

Hemingford Coach – Person Of The Year Nominee: All too often young residents of a small town dream of the day when they can go to college and get away. Hemingford native Jordan Haas saw things differently. Haas wanted to return to his hometown following his graduation following his graduation, and eventually took a position as a football coach and then a teacher at Hemingford High School.
