Drs. Bellwood inform us that J. A. Heist was tossed around pretty severely by a bull at his home, six miles east of Alliance, Wednesday. One rib was fractured and other injuries sustained. Sheriff Sweeney was informed of the fact and hastened down from Hemingford to render any assistance possible.

William Meserve, a dissolute painter, who has become fighting drunk times without number, became mixed in a fight with another painter Saturday night, was taken in charge by the marshal and has a good prospect of spending about thirty days of his future in durance vile.

A committee consisting of F. D. McCormick, L. Pilkington, Jas. Keeler has been appointed by the Alliance fire department to solicit pledges of funds from Alliance citizens for the purpose of adding a combination auto truck and chemical fire extinguisher to the department’s equipment.

The store room in the Imperial building occupied by the Miller Toy Shop has been leased to the Mann Musical company, of Crawford, and will be opened by them in the near future for the sale of musical supplies and fancy work.

Some slick individual forestalled W. R. Harper’s advertising plans by stealing the suit of clothes which Mr. Harper had suspended from his big electric sign in front of the store. This was no part of the plan, Mr. Harper states, and to carry out his original intention he will put out another suit and try it again.

Three Alliance youths, Lyle Pebly, 19, Frank Tompkins, 19, and Wayne Cudny, 16, are being returned from Ogden, Utah to face probable charges in connection with the theft of a 1935 Hudson sedan from the Cover-Jones used car lot at 223 Niobrara avenue last Wednesday night.

March 2, 1943

Gunner Marvin Roach was stationed on the heavy cruiser Chicago that was sent to the bottom January 30 by enemy torpedo planes. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Seidler, who resides on a farm east of Alliance. Mrs. Seidler has received a letter from her son dated February 12, in which he says he is safe and uninjured. He said the cruiser Chicago was first attacked and severely damaged on January 29 and again attacked the following day while being towed to a base. Twelve of the 13 attacking enemy planes, he says, were brought down by U. S. anti-war craft fire.

Two of the “Nebraskans” reported in the births column in the Times-Herald today are going to have few birthdays during their lives. A girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Christensen of Hemingford and a new baby born to Mr. and Mrs. Reed of Crawford will have Feb. 29 as their birthdays from now on.

The Red Cross Drive for Box Butte County officially opened today. According to Mrs. Kenneth Wildt, drive chairman, donations may be left at Newberry’s Hardware Store any time. Mrs. J. D. Emerick is in charge of the booth there. Dick Householder is the Box Butte County Red Cross chairman.

Safety Patrolman Paul Manley said ground blizzards from about 10 miles north and east of Alliance on to Chadron made driving practically impossible. Manley said Highway 2 was closed to the east. County Agent John Reynolds telephoned several farmers and ranchers this morning and got this story: 14 inches snow at Bob Messersmith ranch northeast of Alliance; 16 inches at Joe Manion’s farm north of Hemingford; 12 inches at the Harold Tensley farm northwest of here; 12 inches at the Kenneth Banks place north of town, and 14 inches at Jack Manion’s farm near 16-Mile Corner.

Alliance Chamber of Commerce President Jack Brittan presents the Masid Brothers with a “Welcome Cake” during the grand opening event this morning at Masid Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and Cadillac, Inc. Also present to welcome Leo and Sammy Masid are Chamber directors Chet Irish, W. W. Culwell, Jack Todd, Dale Borg and Duane Pennington. The grand opening features about 80 new automobiles and trucks, free refreshments and door prizes.

Those at the meeting are Mayor Mischnick, Councilmen Dr. J. F. Kennedy and Anthony Yeager, Lynn Kirkpatrick, Vickie Bolek, Connie Retke, Connie Thayer, Marlene Adamson, LaDonna Spencer, Susan Carr, Bobbi Tyndail, Debra Green and Rhonda Burton. Leaders of this group are Mrs. Richard Spencer and Mrs. Bob Carr.

Marv Bowhay was named “Elk of the Year” by Alliance Elks Lodge 961. Exalted Ruler Leonard Mayes presented Bowhay with a plaque. Bowhay is a past exalted ruler and member of the trustees of the Alliance lodge and has been active in ritual work within the lodge. In addition to his local efforts, Bowhay has also served on state youth activities and Americanism committees.

Ed Clark, manager of SWEPCO, speaks to a group of students during the Chamber of Commerce’s Industry Recognition Week. More than 40 business and professional people participated in Vocational Opportunities Day. Business and professional people were at the North High Gym to discuss their occupations with students from Alliance High and St. Agnes High. Bruce Rockey, director of vocational education at Alliance High School, was the director of Vocational Opportunities Day.

Winners are Clifford Fletcher, businessman for March, Beth Fletcher, businesswoman for March and Jim Moravek, the Chamber Leader Award. The Fletchers run Energy Essentials Etc., an extension of their Culligan Water business.

Nikki Cody, a freshman at St. Agnes Academy, has been named a United States National Award winner in Honor Roll, Leadership and Student Council. She was nominated by Barbara Sexson, SAA counselor. Wynette Murdoff, who attends Alliance High School, was named a United States National Award winner in Mathematics. She was nominated for this honor by Wayne Brown, AHS mathematics teacher.

Sixteen-year-old Todd Almond was named Star of Stars at the conclusion of the Alliance Kiwanis 37th annual Star of Tomorrow talent contest Sunday afternoon in the Alliance High School auditorium. Almond played a piano solo. Gordon Hoff, Kiwanis president for 1993, made the award of a trophy and $200 in prize money.

Alliance Times-Herald City Editor Rachel Gonzalez retired yesterday after eight years with the paper. Gonzalez started Oct. 30, 1999, as a staff writer adding a range of duties after the next several years. Her articles and photos shared space with two other reporters most days though the most consistent example of Gonzalez’s work has been the front page, which she composed.
