March 9, 1894

W.F. Rockwell is very busy packing his stock of hardware, and the first car load will go out the last of this week. He will commence business in Wymore, this state, and is anxious to get started and be in time for the spring trade there. He says the town is considerably larger than Alliance and has only one hardware store.

March 10, 1899

Alliance is the county seat of Box Butte county, and her accession to the titles dates from about four o’clock of the evening of March 9th. The supreme court disposed of the matter in short order Wednesday by denying the application of the Hemingford attorneys for a re-hearing, and further ordered the injunction against the county officers, to restrain them from moving the county records, dissolved.

A largely attended caucus was in the court house last evening and nominated the following citizens’ ticket for the control of municipal affairs during the coming year; Mayor- L. Buechsenstein. Councilman First Ward- W.O. Barnes. Councilman Second Ward- C.A. Snow. City Treasurer- F.M. Knight. City Clerk- Jas. H. H. Hewitt. Members School Board- Geo. W. Clark, C.C. Smith, D.K. Spacht.

The Alliance Commercial Club held an important meeting at the club room last night. In the absence of President Phelan, Vice President Warrick presided. When the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved, F.E. Reddish, chairman of the Good Roads committee, filled a written report of what had been accomplished in the way of improving the roads leading to Alliance, and making valuable suggestions for future work.

Mrs. Pat Nolan had been entertaining an out of town friend at her home in this city last week, and said friend lost a valuable cameo brooch. Mrs. Nolan placed a four line want-ad in the Times, at a cost of 20c, and the brooch was brought to the Times office by the finer the very next morning.

Fifty certified seed potato growers of western Nebraska met in Alliance Thursday afternoon representing the entire seed district. Plans for marketing the 1924 crop were discussed.

No more will the clarion call of the auctioneer – going at 75, who’ll give 80 – be heard on the streets of Alliance. No more will Mrs. Jones give two dollars for a useless gadget just to keep Mrs. Smith from having it. No more will the Saturday afternoon crowd be entertained by the talkative Harry Coursey because the city council passed an ordinance last night that prevents auction sales of any kind on the streets of Alliance.

March 9, 1934

One trial and one conviction out of five liquor charges against four Hemingford persons, two of them women, was the score in county court Wednesday. Mrs. Anna Caha, Hemingford cafe proprietress, was found guilty of illegal possession of liquor and assessed a fine of $100 and costs. Her attorney, H.E. Gantz, filed notice of appeal to the district court and bond was fixed at $250.

There are likely to be some increases in Alliance public school teachers’ salaries for the 1939-40 fiscal year, judging from sentiment expressed at the board of education meeting Monday night. The matter came up when board members were deciding on a date to meet to consider the teaching personnel for next year. They agreed on Monday evening, March 20 for the meeting.

Keith Neimann, 23, former Alliance man, is still in a critical condition at Presbyterian hospital, Denver, where he was taken a week ago after he had shot himself over the heart with a .22 pistol. Young Neimann was said to have been despondent following his discharge from the army for physical reasons.

Mrs. R.B. Hyland of Hemingford was chosen by the presidents of the Box Butte County Home Extension clubs as the county representative for the third annual Leadership Recognition Program for Rural Homemakers, Margaret Schluckebier, home extension agent, announced today.

J. Stephen Foster, 30-year-old Alliance man who admitted a breaking-and-entering spree Saturday, will appear in Morrill County court this afternoon at a preliminary hearing. Morrill County Attorney Robert Bulger said this morning that Foster would appear in court at Bridgeport sometime this afternoon to answer the charges.

The Krause Construction Company was awarded the contract for painting the District Courtroom by the Box Butte County Commissioners this morning. Krause’s bud of $554 was low for the job. Only other bid received was from Jack Sampson & Son for $803.27.

Alliance earned its first state tournament ticket to Lincoln since 1960 with a 58-56 heart-stopping victory over Scottsbluff here Friday night in the finals of the Class A district meet. Alliance advances into the 8-team championship tournament field which starts a 3-day grind Thursday through Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wright, of the Wright Funeral Home, announced this morning that they were turning the funeral home back to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Campbell, of Mullen, the former owners. The Wrights came to Alliance in June, 1967, and have been associated with the Funeral Home since then.

Donald F. Sjostrom, 40, is the third person to file with the county clerk as a Republican candidate for Box Butte County Commissioner. He will be seeking one of two Republican nomination on an at-large basis in the May 14 primary election.

Once again the Alliance City Schools board of education has set in motion events leading to a bond election on a new high school building, a proposition that was defeated in an election last May. Meeting in regular session Monday evening, five of the six members present approved a resolution for a school bond issue election.

The Alliance Board of Education will decide on a plan during tonight’s regularly scheduled meeting to ease overcrowding in the elementary facilities by the 1984-85 school year. During a workshop Monday night, the board narrowed the field of options down to renting space in two churches or using the libraries as classrooms, which would mean storing the books in classes throughout the buildings.

State and local authorities were hoping to assess today the damage from a ruptured gasoline storage tank that spilled an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline onto the ground Saturday afternoon in Alliance. Nebraska State Deputy Fire Marshal Jerry Larson of Hemingford, Alliance Fire Chief Bud Taylor and an official from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Control in North Platte were expected to be on the scene today to determine what kind of environmental impact the gasoline spill caused. A 14,000-gallon capacity tank owned by Hempel’s Gas and Appliance ruptured at about 12:44 p.m. while the tank was being filled at the storage site (807 West Second Street) just southwest of K N Energy, Inc., office.

At its regular meeting Monday night the Alliance Board of Education voted unanimously to lease-purchase new computers. A computer lab will be set up at Central Elementary and the computer lab at Grandview will be completed with 20 additional computers.

The Alliance Volunteer Fire Department took their aerial ladder truck and a crew of seven to Bridgeport on Sunday, March 7. The Smith Grain Elevator had caught fire around 3 a.m. and the Bridgeport Fire Department responded at 4 a.m. Bridgeport had no method for putting water into the elevator from the top, Alliance fireman Gary Bauer said.

An unlit sign proclaims McCarroll’s Motel where there have been no vacancies for more than a year, since Northwest Community Action Partnership relocated to the former East Third Street Motel. Ny October 2003, all NCAP’s Alliance services had been moved to the former motel east of the intersection of Highways 2 and 87.

Last night, the Alliance City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance, with one amendment, that will change municipal code dealing with three parking issues. First, the 24-hour parking law would change to 168 hour, or seven days.

Recently, the Box Butte Sheriff’s Office equipped itself with some new CPR masks and medical kits. Chief Deputy J. D. Sutphen said at a recent training through the Nebraska Intergovernmental Risk Management Association, of which the office is a member, Box Butte deputies were asked if they had kits and masks available.
