While visiting last Sunday at the home of Amos Smith, east of town, J. A. Kime’s team broke loose from the hitching post and ran away, demolishing the buggy considerable. Fortunately there was no one in the vehicle.

Contractor Reck reports that the brickwork on the addition to St. Agnes Academy has now reached the second story and that the carpenters are now busily engaged in placing the joist and other work on the second story, also that if the weather continued favorable the building would be completed by the first of the year.

November 16, 1915

George Watkins was arrested in Crawford Sunday on a complaint filed by Jimmy Washington charging the theft of a suit of clothes and the loan of $1.50. Washington was asked by Watkins to make a loan of $1.50 on the streets Saturday night and while Washington was getting his shoes shined, he alleges that Watkins went to his room and decamped with his Sunday suit.

Alliance merchants are planning on the greatest trade extension campaign ever attempted in this section of the west, to be held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, November 22, 23 and 24. Alliance is the logical trading center for this vast territory. Perhaps 5 percent of the people living within the 60-mile radius do the bulk of their trading here.

Miss Ilas Ester Jay of Whitman, student nurse at St. Joseph hospital for the past three years, died Tuesday night from typhoid fever after an illness of five weeks. She would have completed her course as a nurse in March.

November 18, 1930

Three young men were sentenced to spend a year at hard labor in the state reformatory for men at Lincoln, when they appeared before district Judge Meyer here Satuday morning and each admitted guilt to charges of forgery. They are young ranch hands and are Jack D, Ray P and Carl D.

November 15, 1935

The pile of oiled road surfacing material at the east county line on highway No. 2, which confused a driver last weekend in an accident, has been moved, according to Sheriff George Jones, and is no longer in a direct line with the road. The sand pile, dark in color, misleads drivers into thinking the road went straight ahead.

November 15, 1940

Although the civil aeronautics board has not yet ruled on the application of Inland Air Lines for a regular stop at Alliance and no official word has been received from Washington, it would appear almost certain that the stop will be approved. Two carloads of materials, including steel, for the proposed radio beam station are on the tracks here.

November 16, 1945

Pete Johnson this week received a letter from Irma Thomas, a public health nurse stationed at Laconia, Greece, stating that she picked up a small blanket one day recently and that it has a tag on it which read: “From Greek War Relief Assn., Alliance, Neb.” Miss Thomas told of the needs of the people of Greece and the efforts that were being made to supply them with clothing, nursing and food.

November 17, 1950

The search for a location for the United States Air Force Academy went forward today with Alliance and all other Nebraska sites relegated to the sidelines. The site selection board announced in Washington that it has reduced from 354 to 29 the sites it considered suitable for the proposed academy.

November 16, 1955

Three Times-Herald carrier boys won special prizes in the recent Good Luck Clover newspaperboy contest sponsored by Lever Brothers Company. They emerge as minor prize winners from among 120,273 newsboys who asked customers to save green 4-leaf clovers from packages of margarine. The Alliance carriers are Coleman W. Nay, Jan Ashby and Richard Maggart.

November 18, 1960

The City of Alliance today can pay the contractors who are in the process of building a $1,750,000 enlargement project at the Municipal Light Plant. The City Council got the money Thursday night by issuing $1,750,000 worth of its Electric System Revenue Bonds to the Kirkpatrick-Pettis Company of Omaha and five associates.

Bernard Briggs, Alliance rancher and hunter, reports “one hundred percent success” with hunters he has guided in the area this fall. The hunters have come from Alaska, Texas, Wyoming, Illinois and Wisconsin. Deer and pheasants have been the objectives of the sportsmen.

A man being held by Alliance Police in connection with an alleged assault and robbery here Sunday, has been released for lack of evidence, according to a report received this afternoon. The investigation is continuing.

November 13, 1975

A request by a Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Co. official for adoption of a 27.5 percent price hike in natural gas rates has been delayed a second time by the Alliance City Council. On a 3-2 vote, the Council rejected a move to waive public hearings and pass the measure.

November 20, 1980

A semi-trailer truck, hauling about 20 tons of molasses, stalled traffic for about five hours after it collided with a pickup truck, overturned and spilled its cargo in Alliance Wednesday.

November 15, 1985

Three Alliance residents were arrested late Thursday morning on gambling charges that resulted from a two-month undercover operation by the Alliance Police Department. According to information from the APD, Ray F and Marilyn M are being charged with promoting gambling in the second degree, or bookmaking, according to a police spokesperson. Steve M is being charged with possession of a gambling device and carrying a concealed weapon.

A claim of $300,000 filed by an Alliance man who suffered personal injuries in a fall due to the alleged negligence of the Alliance Police Department was rejected Thursday night by the Alliance City Council. The council quickly rejected the claim made by Richard B. under the Political Subdivisions Tort Claims Act.

Box Butte County residents may soon have an improved emergency response system. The City of Alliance, Village of Hemingford and Box Butte County Commissioners are in the process of negotiating a workable agreement to bring Enhanced 911 service to the county.

During last evening’s Alliance City Council meeting, Kayton Electric’s of Holdrege bid of $1,588,800 was accepted for the construction of an electric substation to be located at Emerson Avenue and 25th Street. This would include the relocation of electrical lines on 10th Street, in conjunction with the overpass project.

Cary Minnick, a third grade teacher at Grandview Elementary School, will depart for Tokyo, Japan, as a participant in the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund (JFMF) Teacher Program. To earn this honor, Minnick was selected by a panel of educators from a national pool of over 2,500 applicants.

A fire breaks out in the home. A tornado tears up a section of town. An overnight blizzard knocks out power and heat for the town, and makes roads impassable. In each of these situations, the American Red cross can provide assistance to those in need, and the local chapter is currently looking for volunteers.

RSVP volunteers recently showed their support for the local domestic violence chapter, DOVES. This year, RSVP volunteers conducted a food drive for DOVES. RSVP Director Terry Grosz presented food drive donations and colored ‘stars’ to DOVES Director Jennifer Ponce.
