Harry Greene, of Hemingford, brought his brother, Tom, to Alliance Tuesday to place him under a doctor’s care. He was domiciled at the Preston, and is suffering from diarrhoea.

The Alliance KcKinley and Roosevelt club have made arrangements whereby a special train will be run from the south October 3rd and afford all an opportunity along the river to come and hear the vice presidential nominee and other distinguished gentlemen who will be present.

A fellow named Shoot is being held in custody at the city jail and it is believed is wanted for murder in the vicinity of Joplin, Mo. Reply is awaited from the authorities there.

A man whose name we are unable to learn attempted to purloin a pair of trousers from “The Right” clothing store Saturday afternoon. He had put the garment under his coat and started out of the store.

A stock extra coming into the Alliance yard limit Friday night had a close call from a pile-up when a journal on one of the front cars burned off, allowing the boxing to drop to the ties when the train was going about twenty-five miles an hour.

Just as soon as he can lease 20,000 acres of Box Butte county land in a circular area within six miles of Alliance, Thomas Morrissey of Denver states that he will start preliminary operations toward drilling for oil.

The price paid for sour cream has jumped to 46 cents, which is 19 cents a pound butter fat higher than a year ago at this season. Farmers who took up dairying a year or two ago are now reaping a nice profit on their work and investment and there is not telling what the future holds for them.

Lax enforcement of the double parking laws in the past are over,” according to Police Chief Horton, “and strict enforcement of these rules is in effect now.” Conditions are such in the congested district that severe steps are necessary if drivers are to be able to get through the streets during the rush hours.

A special election, at which Alliance voters will be asked whether or not they want a new city hall and municipal auditorium, will be held on Wednesday, October 23. A 60 percent majority of the ballots cast must favor the proposition if the city is to avail itself of the federal grant of $81,500 or 45 percent of the total cost of the combined building and equipment.

County Judge P. E. Romig Thursday morning suspended the sentence of Donald H, 17-years-old, who was charged by the county attorney, Leo M. Bayer, with driving an automobile with the wrong license plates. The boy’s father paid court costs of $3.95 and the court deferred sentence. The boy admitted to switching license plates on an automobile which he was driving to school here.

For Alliance retailers, who have announced new store hours starting Monday, when clocks will be turned back one hour as the nation goes off wartime, the change to standard time is a simple matter. Under wartime stores opened at nine and closed at six throughout the week, with hours on Saturday fixed at nine to nine.

“Flying saucers” descended upon Alliance Thursday afternoon. And if any interplanetary protagonist of the “saucer” method of military attack has designs on old Mother Earth let’s hope he waits until some of the 1950 small fry grow up a little – then we can quit worrying. “Small but mighty” would be an apt description for some of the Alliance school kids who ran down Thursday’s discs.

The JayCees are out to collect paper and magazines again. Their bimonthly paper drive is scheduled for this Saturday in Alliance. Boy Scout Troop 206 will assist the Junior Chamber of Commerce in this drive, sharing in the profits.

A new plan for developing the industry of this area was proposed Wednesday night at a meeting in Alliance. The Drake Hotel meeting was called by officials of Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Company. They introduced the “Facilities Register” program which is designed to bring business to industries presently in this area.

The fall term of the Box Butte District Curt will reopen here Friday after a one-day recess with court action to begin on a case designed to test the City of Alliance’s dog ordinance. Wade H. Ellis, an Alliance attorney, has appealed a case from Justice Court in which he was found guilty of allowing his dog to run at large.

The new Cortez bus, which the San Hills Tour and Travel Corporation plans to use on its Alliance-Broken Bow route, is making a trial run today. The bus left Alliance this morning and its driver and three passengers will spend the night in Broken Bow and return to Alliance Wednesday.

About 120 employees have been added to Burlington Northern’s employee list since construction on tracks began here six weeks ago. BN is adding a second track running parallel with the present one coming into the city from the northwest, and Y-track intersection.

Alliance police are looking for the driver of a stolen pickup truck that crashed into the side of the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant early Saturday morning. According to the police report, the driver was attempting to make a left hand turn off Flack Ave when the pickup, traveling at high speed, jumped the curb, ran over a fire hydrant and a pedestrian cross walk sign and finally stopped after hitting the restaurant.

Governor Bob Kerrey informed Alliance City Councilman Duane Worley Friday the City of Alliance has been selected as a recipient of a 1985 Plant Two Trees for Energy Award. The recognition is based on the city’s commitment to energy conservation through landscaping, represented by the downtown revitalization project.

September 28, 1990

About 25 tons of hay was destroyed in a fire about 15 miles southwest of Alliance Thursday, according to Shawn Baumgartner of the Alliance Fire Department. Lightning apparently started the fire in a large stack of hay bales Wednesday night and it burned until the fire department was notified at 10:50 a.m. Thursday.

Dayco Products of Alliance is proving that safety in the workplace is a rewarding practice. The employees of the manufacturing plant were honored Monday with the Nebraska Department of Labor 1995 Safety Award, which is part of the state’s Labor Celebration Project. As of today, no one at Dayco has lost time due to injury for 319 straight days.

Box Butte General Hospital, the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department/Res Service, Alliance Police Department, Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office and the Alliance Red Cross particpated in a disaster drill Wednesday evening. A “mock tornado” hit the Farrington’s Daughters building causing several “injuries”. The “tornado” also damaged part of the construction area at the hospital.

Yesterday afternoon the City of Alliance experienced an isolated power outage from 1:28 to 1:38. Roger Reed, interim electrical superintendent, said the source of the outage was a phase to ground fault caused by a squirrel.

Wednesday in Box Butte District Court, Corey R., 40, Gering, was fined $400 on an amended charge of attempted operating a motor vehicle during a 15-year revocation, a Class I misdemeanor. Corey plead guilty to the amended charge, but was originally charged with operating a motor vehicle during a 15-year revocation, a Class IV felony.

Driveways all over town are being decorated with a giant paw print or the letter “A.” Whether it is to show school spirit or just help out with a good cause this fundraiser can do both. The junior class prom committee is once again raising money for prom decorations and entertainment.
