Bulldogs Lasso Longhorns 72 to 40

Looking to snap their 4 game losing streak, the Alliance boy’s basketball team took to the floor Thursday with a game versus Hyannis. The Bulldogs used a big second half and defeated the Horns 72 to 40 in a battle played in Alliance. With the victory, the Dogs now see their record go to 12 and 9 for the year. Leading the Alliance offense was senior Seth Meyring who tallied 22 points. Junior Espen Lanik also had a nice evening, adding 18 points. The Bulldogs outscored Hyannis 38 to 15 in the second half to go on for the win. Alliance also bested the Longhorns in the JV matchup played earlier in the night. The Dogs downed HHS 52 to 21 in a three quarter game.

Hyannis stayed with the Bulldogs throughout the first period. Four early tallies by Lanik gave AHS a brief lead at 4 to 2. Following a hoop by the Horns, a Lanik free throw made the score 5 to 4 at the 5 minute stage. Hyannis took their first lead later in the quarter with a triple as the guests surge ahead 7 to 5. Six straight by the Dogs ensued that put the hosts up 11 to 7. Two buckets by Meyring and a 2 pointer by Alliance’s Payton Boyer gave the Dogs an 11 to 7 lead with under 2 minutes remaining in the first. The teams then traded scores in the final seconds of the opener with Alliance getting deuces from Meyring and Trevor Zurn. After 8 minutes of play, the Dogs were ahead 15 to 11.

Both squads found offensive success in the second. Alliance scored 19 points in the quarter with Hyannis tallying 13. Period #2 began with another basket by Zurn. The Longhorns answered right back with 4 in a row to close to 17 to 15. Alliance then got the ball to Meyring who responded with back to back baskets as the Bulldogs went up 21 to 15. But there was no quit in the visitors. Another 4 to 0 run by Hyannis made the 23 to 19 midway through the half. Bulldog Lexton Salcido came right back with an Alliance goal but another Horn hoop kept the Dog lead at 2. Tied at 25 with under three minutes left in the half, Alliance got a nice lift from Sophomore Devin Graham who came off the Bulldog bench to score 5 points in a row as the AHS margin grew to 30 to 25. Graham also scored earlier in the period to help the Alliance cause. The half ended with hoops by Meyring and Creighton Fritzler. After 16 minutes of play, the Bulldogs had a 34 to 25 lead.

Lanik had a big third quarter to lift the Alliance offense. The lefty guard nailed 4 shots including three 3 points as the Dogs extended their advantage. A Lanik trey started period 3 that pushed the Dog lead to 12. Hyannis then canned a two but another hoop by Lanik kept AHS up 39 to 27. Momentum would then go to the guests. The Horns went on a 7 to 2 spurt to slice their deficit to 7 with 4 minutes left in the quarter. A pair of free throws by Boyer accounted for the lone Bulldog tallies. Up 41 to 34, it was Alliance’s turn to shine. The Bulldogs scored 11 in a row to surge ahead 52 to 34. A pair of triples by Lanik and tallies by Zurn and Meyring gave AHS an 18 point cushion. The period closed with a Hyannis 2 and Alliance leading 52 to 36.

Alliance was solid in the fourth on both sides. The Dogs limited the Horns to just 4 points while scoring 20. Ten consecutive points by the hosts put the game out of reach. Two pointers by Zurn and Fritzler started the run and a 3 point play by Meyring made the score read 59 to 36. Back to back buckets by Salcido and Meyring completed the spree and with under 4 minutes left in the game, Alliance was up 61 to 36. Following 2 free throws by Hyannis, the Alliance margin grew thanks to 2 hoops by Meyring and a three by Salcido. The contest came to a close with a Horn score and baskets by Boyer and Lanik.
