A very talented Scottsbluff 8th grade girls basketball team made an appearance Tuesday at the Holy Rosary Parish Center for a contest with the St. Agnes Academy Crusaders. The Bearcats got off to a fabulous start and easily downed Alliance 40 to 17. With the loss, the Crusaders now have a record of 4 and 2 on the year. Scottsbluff ended their big night then by winning a 10 minute JV game in the nightcap. The Cats topped the St. Agnes B team 17 to 7. St. Agnes’ JV record is now 3 and 3 for the season. Leading the Crusader offense in the varsity battle was Reese Armstrong who tallied 12 points while Stella Beck was Alliance’s top scorer in the B game with 6.
Action began in the A game with the Cats gaining the early advantage. The Bluffs came out red hot of offense scoring 15 points in the opening 6 minutes. Meanwhile shots would not fall for the hosts in the first quarter as SA would go scoreless. After period #1, the Academy was down 15 to 0. Trouble continued for the Lady Crusader in the second. Alliance went scoreless again the quarter while SB increased its lead with 9 more points. Going to half, the Bluff’s margin stood at 24 to 0.
Play was very even in the third. Thanks to 4 baskets by Armstrong, St. Agnes was able to keep their deficit close. A free throw by Crusader Maslin Breen helped the Crusaders score 9 points in the period. As for the Bluffs, they continued their dominance by scoring 10 points in the third. After three periods of play, SA was down 34 to 9. St. Agnes would win the finale 8 to 6. Four points each by Alliance’s Penn Vergil and Armstrong sliced the Bluffs a little but 6 more Bearcat points in the final 6 minutes was too much too overcome. Final Scottsbluff 40 St. Agnes 17
