Cattle Capital Cattlemen Awards Scholarships

The Cattle Capital Cattlemen, an affiliate of the Nebraska Cattlemen represents the beef industry in the Central Panhandle and annually awards monies to young people with goals and aspirations in agriculture, especially the beef industry. Established in 2004, the Scholarship Fund is endowed through the Nebraska Cattlemen Foundation and allows the committee to distribute as many funds as are available each year.

These scholarships are awarded to students pursing higher and extended educational opportunities benefiting agriculture, especially the beef industry. CCC was impressed by the nine outstanding applicants who applied for the scholarship this year and wish them the best in their future education. We encourage them to apply for the 2023-2024 CCC Scholarship as well as the Nebraska Foundation Scholarships that can be found at nebraskacattlemen.org

Cattle Capital Cattlemen President Jerry Underwood announces the recipients of the 2022-2023 Cattle Capital Cattlemen Foundation Scholarships. Jayda Meyring, daughter of Jay and Shauna Meyring of rural Alliance, and Mackenzie Liakos daughter of George and Anne Liakos of Bridgeport will each receive a $1000 scholarship.

Jayda Meyring, senior at Alliance High School, is an exceptional young woman with a passion for cow horses and cattle. She has been very involved in her community, holding numerous officer positions in both FFA and 4-H, competing and placing in livestock judging on state and national levels, as well as showing many animals at the county fair. Jayda has had a great deal of success competing in high school rodeo, placing in Reined Cow Horse for three consecutive years, American Quarter Horse shows, and National Reined Cow Horse Association shows. She has accomplished all this while working on her family’s cow-calf and feedlot operation, maintaining an impressive grade point average, and completing her high school coursework a semester early. She plans to attend Texas Tech University, majoring in Equine Science, minoring in Agribusiness with an emphasis in Ag Sales and Marketing, as well as compete on the prestigious Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team. Jayda states, “I also have a strong passion for agriculture, especially the beef and equine industries and plan to always be involved in them throughout my whole life.”

Mackenzie Liakos, a senior at Bridgeport High School, is excited to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this fall to major in Agriculture Education and has been accepted to the Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program. She plans to use the entrepreneurship opportunity “to further her beef industry involvement.” She looks forward to returning to teach agriculture in a rural community, inspiring the “next generation of leaders”, and owning cattle. She is also interested in bridging the gap between the producer and the consumer, she says “One of my main goals while working in the beef industry is advocacy.” While in high school Mackenzie has been very active in her FFA chapter, serving as Recruitment Coordinator, Vice President, and Secretary. Additionally, she has received many honors in basketball and track and volunteered in a plethora of community service projects all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
