March 2 will mark the 117th birthday of Dr. Seuss. And, while it is tradition for libraries and children to celebrate this literary master each year, how about celebrating as an adult?
Last summer while visiting my family in La Jolla, Calif., I spent some time kayaking La Jolla Cove. This gave me a chance to get up close and personal with the Seuss home, which is perched on a cliffside, much like Grinch’s cliffside home. Dr. Seuss spent many hours observing the waters of La Jolla cove, and that provided the inspiration for some of his most well-known characters. I learned that “The Lorax” was drawn to look like a whiskered fish from the cove, and the Grinch’s dog “Max” was inspired by his wife’s small, gentle natured dog who ran noisily around the home in the morning.
So, to celebrate Seuss as an adult, take the time to let your everyday life inspire you! Maybe you will find laughter in imagining the person who just cut you off having ten apples atop his head! We could all use some laughter…especially now. And, take the time to do the off-beat things—you never know what you’ll take away!
