CENs Offer Expertise in Times of Need

With the winter weather settling in, it’s important to be aware of our surroundings and do what we can to prevent trips, slips, and falls to reduce accidental injuries. According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, “Injuries are a major public health concern… resulting in significant numbers of deaths, hospitalizations, and emergency department visits each year.”

At BBGH, we are lucky to have a number of excellent nurses staffing not only the patient care unit and specialty clinics, but also our Emergency Department (ED). Nine of the nurses in our ED are CENs. A CEN is a “Certified Emergency Nurse.” This certification means nurses have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality emergency care and are trained in advanced life support and trauma curriculum.

BBGH is proud to have nine out of the 209 CENs in Nebraska (according to the (Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing) working to ensure our hospital is one of the greatest places to receive care. Because a number of our ED nurses are CENs, patients can feel confident that in the unfortunate circumstance an ER visit is needed, they will be taken care of by the best of the best in ED nursing. Studies have shown that nurses with more education help decrease length of stay and increase patient satisfaction (Straka, K. L., et al. (2014). The impact and perception of nursing certification in pediatric nursing).
